It's now Jan 45 and sailing out of Bergan in my IXD2,.
My patrol grids vary now but mostly there ar in the AL,BE,AM grids,
however Im finding it now very hard to sneak into a convoy without my stealth meter going red,If am lucky I get 2 or 3 hits before the escorts come for me, even if am not going after a convoy and encounter a warship even when am 50m down silent running something comes along and starts pinging me then come the hedge hogs and dc's.
I now don't stay on the surface very much with a 42 second dive time that's a long time in 1945.
So am wondering is it worth keeping my IXD2 or changing it for something else? (I don't fancy the XXI because it has no rear tubes) any suggestions anyone?

In that situation, so close to home, id ditch that IXD2. It's ill suited for the the northern atlantic. THe primary reason... really the only reason to use that uboat, is because of its reach. It has enough fuel to go to places other uboats can't, and it has enough torpedo's to make the trip worth while.

If your not making those long distant trips, that uboat is not being used for what it was meant for. If you must stay in an IX boat, id opt for an IXB.

When i get that boat i wouldnt ditch it for the world. D2 is my favourite boat. It beats the XXI for the same reasons above even despite the long dive time.

I am a features man. And features win wars in my mind. :yep:

It's too damned clumsy and big....like a battleship that runs at PD.

I load my IXD2 with at least 8 acoustic torpedoes and as each Escort comes for you give them one.Once you are known to the convoy use the snorkle for extra speed.I have re-lived that moment in the movie U-571 many times when the Destroyer is bering down on you and you are waiting for the rear tube to come online, great stuff!Once all Escort are sunk or disabled, the convoy is yours.
P.S.Beware the Hedgehog,very nasty.

I would go for the type XXI best under water speed and you need it, once my cover is blown attacking a convoy I fire off a couple type IV’s or V’s acoustic torpedoes at the closing Destroyers, crash dive drop my Bold4 and get the hell out of there. But I to like the IX/D2 Boats but my chance of survival in 1945 is less than the XXI Boats.

There are those, who are going to have a hard time in SH4.

IXD2 has less displacement then a Gato, and is smaller in both length and width :D

How much harder do the escorts get from 1944 to 1945? In early '44 I'm having no trouble at all penetrating convoys in a D2, usually with 5 or 6 escorts.

First, update it in GW 1.1.

Then, get the XXI. With an XXI, you don't *need* read tubes :yep:

You're right :)

With silent running speed @ 6 knots (down to 4-3 knots if you want become really silent) you can change heading easily and faster than other uboats, stalking convoys with no problem below them if you can outbreak the escort protection.
To all above add:
-time for reloading tubes really fast
-23 torps all stored inside
-6 tubes (6 or 4+2, what is better? rear tubes can be used for nasty tactics, or versus nasty DD's approaching you from back, but when you have the XXI you can use it's submerged speed and sonar decoys as replacement; IMHO DD's are really a threat when more than one are approaching and then it's really hard to sink one with a rear shot trying to escape the other/s, i prefer evade doing one thing at my best)
-it's damn cool to see, even enemies will "fall" in lo..ehrr...well, they 'll fall for sure :D

Well guys thanks for the advice I will ditch my Ixd2 most proberbly for an IXB,all of my subs are loaded with GE7E homeing torps front and rear from 43-45.
I do have GWv1.1 d/loaded but waiting to install it after I finished this career,it would be a pity to stop now just to install the update.

hi,

Just started playing a IXD2 as practice for SHIV (a little premature!!) just to get a feel for large fleet boat types, as previously mentioned the Gato and Balao where even bigger. I like the ability to cross the atlantic to the US coast running at Std or Full because of the large fuel reserve which allows me to keep the crew's morale up if we don't sink anything - but it's gonna have one large ASDIC profile so that could be interesting in '43-'45 if i survive.

The dive times are incredibly slow but that has meant changing my attack tactics but i'll get used to them, at least this thing can dive to 200m+ (so i can hopefully escape depth charge attacks using depth as it handles so sluggishly) unlike US or RN fleet boats who were only rated to 100m! (although were know to dive to 150m in extreme circumstances)

Bloody typical I get rid of my IXD2 to an iXB and the idiot sends to grid CA.By the time I returned back to Bergan it's now April 5th 1945 now am sent to grid CC13.
Bloody hell does'nt the guy know (bdu) the russians are in the Berlin suberbs by now and what am I suppose to do when I get there trash a convoy?I think it would me more feasable to go hunting a couple of TF's to me. but who am I to argue with bdu.
