Hi there. I sent a PM to Jscone regarding SH3 Commander because I would like a few questions answered before I install it. The last time I installed it I had problems, so I need those problems addressed before I install it again.

I've used it for a long time and wouldn't live without it. I'll be glad to help with any questions. I have no knowledge of how it works. I have to have things explained to me in careful detail; but I do have a thorough working knowledge of how to use it from the gaming point of view. I think it's the single greatest asset to my gameplay.
I'll help any way I can.

Hi Steve, thanks for responding. In the regular SH3 I use the German rank. So, if I install sh3 Commander and have to choose German language in order to retain my present rank, does everything else come in German, such as what the crew says, and what language are the daily reports. I cannot read German so I would be lost. Can you answer that? I want the German rank, but I want everything else in English :-?

It lets you choose each individual setting, or keep the default settings from the game. It tends to do everything one piece at a time, which is one reason I like it so much.
Commander lets you use German, American OR British ranks, whichevery you like, and changes nothing else unless you tell it to.

My library time is almost up. I'm sorry I won't be able to post again until Saturday Morning.
I'm sure others will help. If not, see you then.

It really does enable you to do a great number of things easily.
1. Set reload time for deckguns.
2. Set wave size.
3. Set time compression settings for different situations. You can change it so the TC goes to Real Time when the enemy is spotted.
4. Allows you to change crew names if you want to use a "historic crew" or put all your friends on the boat.
5. Allows greater freedom in awards. Say you sink the Nelson, you could award the whole crew the Iron Cross 2nd Class
6. Allow you to select which Crew Fatigue model you wish to use, or to have no fatigue.
7. Allows you to have realistic transfers between patrols, and realistic career lengths, after which time a little bio will be generated.
and much much much more.
You can also install it with the JoneSoftGenericModEnabler.

Thanks Heibges. I am convinced. I screwed up last time I installed it because I didn't have the help file, but I have it now and will have to read it carefully to be sure I don't screw up again. I will probably be asking a lot of questions, because, as you know, I have difficulty understand things sometimes. I hope it doesn't change my cfg and menu_en files. Thanks. Robert

If I can do it, anyone can do it.
If you use Real Uboat 1.45 all the ranks will be in German anyway.
What mods are you thinking of using?
What fatigue model are you considering?
You really should start from a fresh install and patch.

I do not like RUb1.45 and I changed the cfg files for 0 fatigue. The mods I have installed are: MVP-1.0, RecManual by Augie64, JCW_Intro, Sound Trainer, Intro-q1, removed the "Game Paused" words, Bow Fix VIIB, No_Fatigue, but it didn't work as I expected, Daily Contacts Report 1.01, Ave.Joe Torpedo+Deckgun speed-of-sound explosions delay v1.2+ plus some additional sound I wanted, German hits, RealDC_2mod, Type VIIB Realistic Hull, Atl Wake Mod v2, Dials mod v 1.2, SlidingStationsPanel1.01, Bow SPray v1.2, Atl Sky mod, Lighthouse mod, Improved Deck compass v1.1, HandLookBatter, Course Solver, ColouredOffice, Improved Smoke v1.1, UniformModforSH3v2, Krillers Water mod, Marhkimov's light night mod, New night sea and sky, Exhaust Smoke 1.2, War Radio, SomarDC_20(1.4 ready).

Gee Thanks Heibges :D You give me too much credit. I just downloaded the latest version of SH3 (2.5) so I could get the help file as I only had the old help file. I would like to continue my career as is stands now with the same crew. I do not wish to start a new career. But this point of retiring Commanders of subs I'm not sure I like. I wish to keep playing and NOT retire, is that possible? It memtions that it will create a history of me, such as birthdate and birthplace, heck I don't know what to enter in there. As you can see from my signature, my career name I have chosen is Adolf Ritcher and will be using U51 to finish the war if that is possible, because it is fully upgrated with everything. I also keep track of my crew and their performance. Robert

Do you know where I get Jase's "360 Degree Bearing Plotter for Navigation Map" ?

There is a Realistic Career Length box that can be checked. As long as you do not check the box you are not retired.
You should be in port before you install SH3 Commander at this point. If you want to install other mods after SH3 Commander, there is a Rollback SH3 Commander button which you should hit, to restore game like it was before SH3 Commander.
If it's not on the subsim dowload page, I can't help you out.

I am in port and ready to install. I just use the setup programme, correct? Do I need to use JSGME to activate it? How do I get the war radio news installed and where do I obtain them from. I am going to run the SH3 Commander v2.5 setup now.

It is going to ask me for my name, which I assume that it will be Adolf Richter, then date of birth, Place of birth, Date of Intake = I don't know what to put in for these ones; then it is crew next, promotions, and then Seekadett. What do I do with these?
robj250
05-18-06, 11:31 AM
Hmm, I guess I don't need any of that information as I am continuing an existing Career. If there is something I have to do in SH3 Commander to be sure I am not retired, please advise, of if I don't want crew changes, etc.
SHIII Commander works fine.... it could be you installed it wrong or it installed in the wrong place. SHIII Commander installs to it's own folder on your C /Drive. and automatically links it's self to SHIII.
I recently had a little problem and had to reinstall SH3C again which is working OK now, but I would like to say I never did find out what caused the problem. Apart from that SH3C is a very good mod well worth installing.

Well, it's doing it again. The last time I used it, SH3 Commander changed my rank different from what SH3 had give me. SH3 had my rank as Kapitanleutnant, and SH3 Commander keeps changing it to Oberleutnant z. S. That is what I didn't like before. It keeps changing the en_menu and I don't know if it has changed any other files that I had edited. How can I stop this, cause if SH3 is going to keep chaning my rank back to what it wants, then I'm going to uninstall it.

As long as the Realistic Career Length Box is not checked there will be no retirement or crew transfers.

What about what it is doing to my rank? Also, the last time I used SH3 it removed the medals I had earned in SH3, but I haven't got that far yet, as I was this rank problem solved. SH3 assigned me the German rank as Kapitanleutnant, but SH3 Commander rolls that rank back to Oberleutnant z. S. If this cannot be changed so that I get my proper rank back then I'm NOT going to use SH3 Commander, cause it probably has removed my medals, even though I have not gone that far yet to find out. I am NOT amused.

Hmm... :hmm:
When I started to use Cmdr I found no problems in my ongoing career.
But, I think I wasn't promoted yet (so I was still Oberletnant zur See) and I'm not sure if I had any medals at all that time.
But at least it copied my sinkings and crew properly.
I'm sure someone else can help you more.

I started to use the Commander to launch my next patrol and it gave me published news for the month of July 1942, when my patrol was Aug 21, 1942. So, I am going to do my 33rd patrol using just SH3 until these problems I'm having solved.

The German rank labels in SH3Cmdr are the same as those used in the stock game. How do I know? Because the devs used my fix!
Anyway, you must be the only person out there whose ranks change. As you have about 135 different mods installed, I'd say that one of them has stuffed around with your rank titles.

That is correct. The summary news is for the *prior* month. The reasoning is quite simple - it's a bit hard to give you summary news for the current month when the month isn't over yet... ;)

No it's not. SH3Cmdr generates this information itself.

No, YOU did that. We went through this before.

I think Robert that you and SH3Cmdr are just totally incompatible. ;)

I think the large number of mods is probably the problem. Something is getting overwritten somewhere, and who knows how long it would take to figure out which mod is doing it.
Personnally, I only use 2 other mods besides SH3 Commander

I only have 31 mods installed including JSGME. Maybe SH3 Commander is not compatible with the mods I have installed, sorry about that.
Heibges

But the way SH3 works, 5 of those mods could all overwrite, for example, the basic.cfg, and depending on which order you installed the mods, only one might end up being valid.
If you just want to play through the war, you probably don't need SH3 Commander.
If you were involved in an Online Campaign, where you had to change boats, crew, and dates on a regular basis it might be more neccessary.

No - I would guess that at least one, and maybe only one, of the mods you have installed is not compatible with SH3Cmdr (or perhaps even SH3 for that matter...)
Any mod that changes rank levels is essentially breaking ties with EVERY other mod out there. And it sounds like you have installed one that has the well-meaninged intention of correcting the start rank to ObLt instead of Lt to reflect reality. But this will clash with 99.9% of existing mods as they may overcome the problem by lowering the renown required for the first promotion. Thus, with the "adjusted" ranks and say GW, or Rub installed (and I know you don't have these mods installed), you'd be promoted to KptLt after your first patrol...not good.

Well, even though one or maybe two are interferring, I think I'll still keep the Commander installed to see how things go. Sorry for my problems guys, but they are my problems and I have to figure them out. Thanks anyway. Good hunting!!

For the benefit of others, I have checked <name removed by request> menu files and yes, my comment above, viz:

is correct (well, one correction, if GW or Rub was installed so too would the correct ranks, so the player would still be demoted). Somewhere along the line a mod has been installed which has changed the base rank to ObLt. Good in theory, but instantly results in demotion when any mod that overwrites **_menu.txt, or SH3Cmdr, is installed.
The larger mods have taken what I consider a more robust approach by lowering the renown required for the first promotion, thus a Commander will only be a lowly Lt for the first patrol before getting promoted to ObLt. Further, changing the rank labels breaks the connection with associated rank images. It's really an awful bandaid solution.
<name removed by request> and anyone else with this problem, will need to make a decision. If you are not prepared to have your rank "realigned" to that of the stock game whenever you install a new mod, then you need to either:
a) install no mods that replace **_menu.txt
b) be prepared to give your text file editor a workout!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

31 mods is about 27 more than I'd advise using. The more mods you load on top of each other, the more potential there is for problems. If this problem is cropping up only when SH3 Commander is installed I'd have to say that the problem must be caused by one of your other mods interacting poorly with SH3 Commander. Do any of the other mods adjust the rank levels? I.e. if there's a mod out there that starts all new commanders at a rank of Oberleutnant zur See then SH3 Commander could very easily overwrite the effects of such a mod because it would overwrite the ranks to be the same as the stock game ranks. This wouldn't be an SH3 Commander 'bug' per se: it would be a mod compatibility issue. As Jaesen has said, a mod that adjusts starting rank labels is a poor solution and likely to cause a whole host of problems.
