View Full Version : N00bs - how did you find out about SH3?

It seems that there has been an insurgence of new Kaleuns. This is GREAT. I'm so glad to hear that the game is gaining in popularity.
Don't fret if I (and maybe others) are a little hard on you in the beginning. N00b questions can be frustrating, especially if they put a negative spin on our beloved SH3. Plus, I'm at sea most of the time and am almost always drunk. And in the long run, the rough treatment will probably do you some good. What's more, the damned search function is hopeless. So nevermind the odd cuff to the head.
Now,
What brought you into the light of my favourite game (possibly of all time)?

I read about SH3 on gamespot i think. Thats what got my intrest rekindled.
It looked like it had some of the AOD atmopsheric flavor and not all cut and dry like SH1 was. (i played the hell out of AOD, and by the time SH1 came out i was burnt out, skipped SH2 entirely).

I read about SH3 in August's PC Gamer. I was on the plane back from BC. It was Andy Mahood's sim column. I remember thinking "Right - there's a whole legion of hardcore sub nerds". Memories drifted back of ads for games like 668(i) and names like Silent Service floated into my mind. Andy was twisted about SH3, and I decided to give it a try.
I've been wickedly captivated by SH3, not to mention all things naval, since August. And it's been tested - BF2, as always, lurks on my harddrive, and I immersed myself in Oblivion, only to be drawn back to the salty business of hunting merchant ships. This game has changed me, as a gamer. It's a one-way ticket, baby.

P.S. I'm off to Chicago to climb onto U505 in three weeks.

Shiatsu - I should have put in an 'other' option. I'm a n00b when it comes polling.
Correction - maybe a brother-in-law is friend? Maybe not. ;)

Yeah, PC Gamer always comes in handy during a bit of time travelling.

It's funny...I was actually a part of the Subsim community WAAAYYY back before SH2 ever came out (1999-2000). I had only played SH1, but was eagerly looking forward to SH2. But then it kept on getting delayed and delayed. After over a year or more of delays, I drifted away from subsims altogether. I missed SH2 completely. I didn't even know about SH3 until I decided one day, about a month ago, to check back in on subsim.com to see what was happening. It had literally been close to five years since I had come to this site. Wow, have times changed!
In fact, it had been so long since I had been here that I didn't even remember what my old forum name was. had to start all over again a the beginning. Oh well. I'm very happy to be back, however, and I am enjoying the hell out of SH3.

same thing, i wanted to get into sub sims back around 688, but didn't have the cash for it. but it was amazingly rated by gamespot and i gave it a try. never looked back.
I saw it on the shelf in a local game shop.
That same moment I remembered the nostalgic times of playing Silent Service II in my early teens. I hadn't played a subsim since.
I went home and read all the reviews I could find on web.
The next day I spent 49 € and bought the game.
Since that day I've been having difficulties keeping my wife happy! :D
I could smell it in the air that SH3 was on its way, just like I can smell SH4.

I had enjoyed playing Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator II: Pacific Theater and I was specifically looking for a submarine simulation PC game. I searched on amazon.com (in spring 2005) and discovered that SH3 had come out, read some reviews, and bought the software in June 2005. I had hoped that my home computer would have enough power to play it, but I was sorely disappointed. Rather than give it away or throw it out, I held onto it until Feb 2006 when we purchased a more powerful computer. After replacing the pre-installed MicroCenter graphics card with a middle to low end video card, I started playing and have become addicted.

I was just addicted to submarines at a very young age, and as soon as the home PC was out i was playing games then one day i just about fainted in the PC shop there in front of me was this WW2 submarine sim called Aces of the deep. From then on i just keep buying sub games. Now im up to SH3 :D

Father servered on a tin can (USS Rush 714) and my brother servered on USS Kennedy.
Growing up with that, watching Run Silent-Run Deep and Das Boot plus a Navy recruiter pushing for submariners I'd played the real game on board the USS Greenling and USS Dace. Spent my time on the stack listening to fish fart and ships screw(s)!!
Just could never get it out of my blood.
AOD
SSN
SH II, III (hopefully IV)
688I
Subcommand
and a draw full of DOS versions.

I have seen SH3 in a game shop, read about it on the internet, and than bought, and i can tell that is the best simulator ever, or better, i can compare it with Xplane, even this is an impressive flight simulator.
Both of them are the best you can find now about simulation games, even they are so different...
But i am so happy to have bought SH3 and upgraded with Grey Wolf and other mods.
Thanks a lot to all the guys that have build a so fantastic Grey Wolf and all the other modders!!

Just been a lurker, not a noob, I played the hell out of AOD and SH1, SH2 is catching dust on the shelf, SH3 is just a blast. Haven't had that much fun since AOD.

A while ago (wow, must be four or five years now!) I went through a burst of nostalgia and downloaded from abandonware sites all the old games I used to play, including Wolfpack.
It seems to be universally denigrated now (especially in comparison to Silent Service, which I never played) but I loved it and when I couldn't get it to work properly I cast about for another submarine simulator. I found Silent Hunter II on amazon for next to nothing, and decided to have a punt on it. Four months, an intervention and extensive rehabilitation later, I finally managed to stop playing it for a bit, but I've been thoroughly addicted ever since.

Addiction seems to be a consistent theme here...{burp}
Im no noob :-j I first saw/haed about it when browsing game trailers.com, I normally dont like sims, im more of an fps/rts man, but SH3 looked extrodanary and was big departure form my usual gaming habits, when i bought it i was sceptical - in the past i bought sims (mainly fligh sims) played them for a day or two then got fed up!
With sh3 it was very different, i played it and played it and played it! I still go back occsionally, but SH3 has lasted me over 1 year! making it the second most played game by me, the first was C+C Red Alert 2 I played that on and off for about 3 years online.
Sh3 kept me so busy I now have a whole stack of games i need to catch up on! :rotfl:

Heard about it on WPL. Followed news, Joined UBI whilst it was in progress.
Won the comp and spent £180 pound to play it 2-3 weeks before everyone else.
Joined subsim,

Box in the store for me.
Never been into sim games much. But for some reason I've always really enjoyed WWII games.
I like strategy games, I guess is the main reason. And the way you have to decide about what technological advances to get and when just adds to this.
Back in the day I was just playing sports games on my Sega when I rented a Playstation from Blockbuster. I grabbed Panzer General with it, and was hooked.
I bought a PS soon after and logged hundreds upon hundreds of hours playing that and Allied General. And to this day WWII games just seem to hold more appeal for me than anything else.
Oh, I should add that I like sub movies a lot. Red October is one of my favorite movies. And I really enjoy any sub movie, basically.
This is kind of strange, and I’m not sure why it is. But that fact coupled with my <3 of WWII games in general made SHIII a no brainer for me.
