It is June, 1941 and I have a VIIB and my base is St. Nazaire. When can I get a sub that has more than 1 stern tube, and if I do get a new sub, can I keep my same crew that I have now as I know their endurance, etc. very well.

Take a look at http://www.communitymanuals.com/shiii/index.php?title=Career_Timeline.
If you want two stern tubes in 1941 then you'll have to transfer to a flotilla with type IX's. So it would be the 2nd and the 10th Flotilla, both operating from Lorient. You'll keep your same crew so don't worry about losing them.

Hi SirHiggins. It was just actually a thought. I have used the VIIB for so long now, I am used to it, I was just wondering what the differences would be using a different sub. However, after listening to what others have said, I think I will stay with my VIIB.
Btw. Does anyone have a War Badge and a Front Clasp I can add beside the medals I have won. During the 31 patrols I have done since I started playing SH3, I have awarded them to my crew but I haven't got any.

I recently moved to an IXB and the only thing I miss from my trusty VIIB of 18 patrols is the turbocharger modification, however that will change after my next patrol.

You should give the type IX a chance. I wouldn't sail in any other boat. You have to like long patrols though, but it's great having the surface speed and lots more torps. Sure it has a slower diving depth and it's performance underwater doesn't match a type VII, but you'll mostly be attacking lone merchant ships rather than convoys. You'll also miss out on the US coast, South Africa and the Caribbean with it's nice juicy lone tankers :)

YEA!! for AC/DC :D Does the IXB have the same speed and endurance (length of stay) underwater and speed above water as the VIIB?

 hehe, it gives 17/8 knots max unmodified above the water and 8 knots submerged and its larger so less manouverable which is a bit frustrating coming from a 20 knot manouverable VIIB underwater endurance is greatly increased if I remember correctly.

I'm not cleverer than before :-? I saw in other topic that the geographical positions of the patrols depends on the flottilla, is it sure or only "serious accidents"?

Iv'e got a IXD2 one big boat loads of torps only one snag a 42 second dive to pd not very efficient to go convoy bashing in unless your heading in that direction.
But I love the boat I think myself it's better than a XXI

I think I'm going to stick with the VIIB for a while, I've got used to handling it.

I'd love to get an IXD2, personally...I know the diving time stinks like a really bad limburger, but to have all those torpedoes available AND to be able to go to Penang and spend a long time over on the US eastern seaboard/Carribbean and the convoy routes of Brazil...I'd love it! LOL Then again, I'm in '39 with a VIIB, so I'm not one to talk. (Couldn't stand the thought of using a IIA for all that time...what does Onkel Karl think we can do with only five torpedoes?!)

Out of interest what is the fastest U boat with a super/turbocharger and what is its top speed on the surface? Fastest Ive been was 20 kts.

I was under the impression that it was the VIIB with MAN engine upgrade. This can pull 21kts in perfect weather. I thought the IXs were slower on the surface, but recently i've been challenged on this. I'm not totally sure.. I never run with IX because I hate the sluggish underwater maneuvering. When the DCs start falling, you want to be in a VII.

The books I have rate the VII at 17 knots and the IX at 19. I'm not sure if those are supercharged or unsupercharged speeds. I was offended that the game lets you buy goodies that let you go 20-21 knots, but I could be wrong about that. I would like to see some real evidence, though, one way or the other.

Going by the speed figures in the SH3 Manual, and by the speed modification of x1.2 for the MAN (as given on http://www.communitymanuals.com/shiii/index.php?title=Career_Timeline#Diesel_Engine_Supe rchargers
A type VIIB with no supercharger 17.2 kt, with a MAN is 20.64 kt.
A type IXC with no supercharger 18.3 kt, with a MAN is 21.96 kt
So in a stock game the IXC should be slightly faster than a type VIIB - as I believe was the case in real life. I agree with Sailor Steve though. From all my reading I've never heard of U-boats doing that kind of speed. Seventeen or eighteen knots has been about the maximum.

Just did a test of my supercharged IXC in perfectly calm weather. The speed flickered between 21 and 22 kts :)

Thanks alot, I realise its not very realistic but to be absolutely honest I have a very time consuming job in the airline industry, so every second counts, I like to move quickly between contact points, then when I have found a contact, spend some time creating a plan of attack from an unseen depth.

I had to hunt down and ressurect this old thread. I just had a look at the Anatomy Of The Ship book on the Type VII, and this is what it says:
The original Type VII (which was never called VIIA) was unsupercharged, and made 17 knots.
The Type VIIBs were all supercharged, and made 17.9 knots.
The Type VIICs were all supercharged, and made 17.6 knots.
The game is wrong, the listed top speeds are the best speeds WITH superchargers, and it's almost certainly true of the Type IXs as well. No 20-21-22 knots.
