View Full Version : Losing crew to other boats
I am using SH3 Commander but don't like the option where it transfers out one crewman after each patrol. Not that I'm against the realism part, just that I don't like that if I go into SH3 Commander later for something (like to rename someone) it then will take out another crewmember. Plus, I don't think losing one crew per patrol is historically accurate.
So I wondered if anyone had done research to know about how many crewmen were transferred to new crews or new posts after a typical patrol. I have read several books but never tried to glean much direct info from them. I was thinking maybe I could start transferring out crew myself (dismissing them based on a random die roll). My first thought was 5% among everyone except the LI, IWO, and IIWO.
So on completion of a typical patrol any given boat would lose about 2 men. Does that sound typical? Or should it be a little higher, like maybe 10%? Thoughts?
And what about the LI, IWO, and IIWO? I know lots of times an IWO would serve for a while then go to command school to get his own boat and the IIWO would mostly be promoted to IWO. How many patrols was that, typically? Maybe three? Again, I'm just trying to get my crew to more or less follow actual Ubootwaffe history.
What about the LI? I don't see where they seem to get transferred out too much. Are LIs more or less tied to the boat, so that they know them intimately and remain fixed to a given boat?
And lastly, what about the captain? In the game you can get yourself a new boat. In real life, if a captain took on a new boat, he didn't bring his old crew with him, did he? Again, just looking to get some information from this informed community so I can make my own little rule set on the side to keep my crews in line with historical actuality.
Thanks.

Three things:
1. You can turn the option off at any time.
2. A crewman is not necessarily transferred after every patrol.
3. A crewman will only be transferred (if at all) when you press "Launch SH3!". In other words you can go into SH3Cmdr as much as you like and tinker with your crew or do whatever, and provided you don't press the "Launch SH3!" button, you won't lose anyone.
...Plus, I don't think losing one crew per patrol is historically accurate.

Have you noticed that the option is called "Simulate REALISTIC crew transfers"???
This is a subtle way of stating that the current logic IS based on historical research and applied the best that SH3 will support. Considering the general content of SH3Cmdr, surely you don't think we just made up any old cr@p for the sake of it? :D
Indeed, not only is the chance of transfer realistic (even by rank level), but so too are the reasons for transfer.
The transfer logic is contained in the "Career options.cfg" file. It is fully user configurable if you want to change the ratios and chances.
Now, if you want the chance of transfer to differ based on individual crewmen and their roles, you'll need to turn the option off and manually transfer crew yourself, which ironically is even less realistic, as the Captain was not always, if ever, in control of who comes and goes. You need to weigh that aspect up too - you'll find that the SH3Cmdr transfer feature is in rounded terms the most realistic way to go.
3. A crewman will only be transferred (if at all) when you press "Launch SH3!". In other words you can go into SH3Cmdr as much as you like and tinker with your crew or do whatever, and provided you don't press the "Launch SH3!" button, you won't lose anyone.
Every time I tried that (tinkering with the crew but not launching SH3) it tells me my changes won't be saved. So I'd launch the game only to find someone was transferred. So I'd grab a new crewman, but he'd be named Deutschy Krautenstein or some other stupid SH3-standard name, so I'd go back into SH3 to rename him, then launch again, only to lose another crewman! How do you save crew changes without pressing the Launch SH3 button?

The reason I didn't think it felt realistic is because every time it happened I lost one and only one crewmember. Yet I recall reading where sometimes half a dozen or more crewmen would leave for higher training, to go to a new boat, or whatever. So the "one-per-patrol" didn't seem realistic. Maybe I just accidentally kept "rolling ones" or something.
I'll turn it back on and see how it turns out (after I learn how to save crew name changes and the like without launching SH3 from the Launch SH3 button that is).

Just press the "Apply" button after you've dropped the medal/badge/qual into the appropriate area. That is:

How simple. I have done that, manage the crew then hit Apply, but when I got the message that game files will not be changes if I didn't launch SH3 I thought it was talking about the changes I applied to the crew, so I would launch it!
Thanks for that simple pointer. I'll try out the historical crew changes and see if that suits me. Thanks so much.

That message you get when exiting SH3Cmdr is simply a reminder advising you that SH3Cmdr has not copied any files into SH3.
The changes you made to your *career* files *were* saved by pressing the Apply button in the Crew Manager component! If you generate an updated crew list, you'll see your changes reflected.
