I spent 24 years in the US Navy and have always wished I could have sailed into my home town on a warship. Last night I did. :D

Very nice! :D
My next patrol grid is CA28. I was wondering whether to pop in and see what New York was like, now I definately will.

Ya gotta go see NY at least once. Just pray you dont go all that way only to find 15 winds and heavy rains. :88)
Next to NY my next favorite port is Penang. Its not much to look at, it's just the idea of making that journey and arriving.
You should have thrown a tie line around the old lady and towed her home as a prize.
Any mod your using for those great images?

I never been that far to get into New York ... but after these nice pics I am going to make a special trip to have a look around..... I see you are surfaced so you must have got through the patrols if there was any .....

Just left NY harbour with lot of sunken wrecks Oct 42,I do like those old liners that sail in and out of there.
As for Penang I was wondering do you get ordered to sail there or do you do out of your own accord?
Ducimus

Own accord.
If you happen to be an patrolling in the cape area, and have enough fuel for the trip ;)

Hey, I'm pretty impressed by it... i was always afraid to go to New York because I was afraid cities of that size were'nt modelled. Was I ever wrong!

I've been to New York once. It was 1942 sometime. I had my trusty Type IXC. It was overcast, rainy, and heavy fog. I even ran into Lady Liberty. :dead:

I noticed that you were under attack in the harbour - what did you sink? Deck gun? What's in there in terms of shipping? Are there any naval gun emplacements ashore?

No gun emplacements that I could find. The gun action was towards a stationary T3 (at anchor?). I ran into a Clemson to stbd as I cleared the narrows and entered the harbor. It was also stationary and was therefore dead meat. Outside of that I found a C2, T2 and several small ones. All the headaches are outside in the sound. 4 warships looking all over for you. Just creep along till you hit deep water. :|\
You've circumnavigated the Atlantic, and, OMG...still using the detection meter!! Shame, shame Kaleaun!!! :lost:

Meh, if your just starting out in SH3, don't listen to him. I think most everyone used the stealth meter when they first start playing.
Later on though, your expected to take off the training wheels. ;)

Its in the realism options when you first start a patrol or single mission.
"No stealth meter" or something like that.
Once you start a patrol your kinda stuck with your settings for the duration of the patrol. So choose wisely before starting.
After that the next thing to ween yourself off of is automatic TDC calculations. if your using it. It has nasty side effect of giving you highly unrealistic tonnage. Aka "the silver bullet effect" Since with autoTDC you can individually target certain compartments when under 1000 meters range (engine, fuel bunker,) and take out a ship with one torpedo, 99.9% of the time. (Imagine an IXD2 or XXI with auto TDC doing this.. essh).
With manual TDC you can't do that, so you'll use more torpedo's. Anywhere betwen 2 to 3 torpedos per ship excepting the smaller 2000 tonners. Those are 1 fish shots.
After that would be the Weapons officer assistance. I still use him honestly. Ill make my calc's first, then if im not feeling good about it, have him double check me.
I think the final kick in the pants would be taking off the map contact updates option. (game displays sonar contacts on the map as the lines and such that you see, which you've been probably using for plotting)
i dont think i could ever force myself to take this option off honestly.. In this regard i am a wuss :D
One big kink is the external camera. This gives you WAAYY too much info. But turning it off deprives you of those glamour shots of your boat. I recently edited mine a bit so i can only look directly around my boat in free cam, and not jump round from ship to ship looking at whats going on. that way i can look at my boats exterior, but not "cheat" and look at that merchant 4000 meters away while submerged and see what my torpedo's did to him and if hes stopping or still underway.... that sort of t hing.

Can you tell me what files you edited for the camera, i always have the camera enable as probably like every commanders reason i like viewing the sub, but dont like the cheating bit in it, Im usually good and dont click to view other ships and have torpedo view off. But editing what your done would be more disciplined

I dont have it infront of me.
I think its commands_eng.CFG or something like that. Its the file that contains all the hot key assignments.
What i did was remark out (use semicolon) , i think its commands 51 or 52. there about.
its the "<" and ">".
Further up towards the begining of the file i remarked out F12.
In action it totally disable half of the freecam functionatliy. Without the < or > keys you cant toggle views at all. The F12 being gone, makes it a bit harder for me to look on the surface without using a periscope. I have to dileberatly use the slide menu to do that. F12 is just too quick and easy.

Thanks!
I'm just teasing anyway. Of course play the game so you have fun. This is my first career so I'm playing at 57% realism. There would be so much you'd miss otherwise if you're a newbie that likely it wouldn't be any fun without some of the aides at first. But for sure use the German language, it's great, and you still get the English translations, but it's way cool to hear the crew call you Kaleun.

I thought everyone had gone to NY. When I was there, I think '42, type IX, it was pretty quiet. I have the screenies of the Lady. I think I'll go back in 1944 and see if it's any hotter. :hmm:

It doesn't look quite so good during the day. I was going to wait for nightfall but instead I committed suicide by surfacing to take some pics.
http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/2356/york10mb.th.jpg (http://img91.imageshack.us/my.php?image=york10mb.jpg)
Of course within minutes I was dead, thanks to aircraft (and probably thanks to the airpower mod as well)
http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/2376/york30ah.th.jpg (http://img91.imageshack.us/my.php?image=york30ah.jpg) http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/2773/york21sz.th.jpg (http://img91.imageshack.us/my.php?image=york21sz.jpg)
It's quite easy getting in. There's about 5 warships patrolling the entrance, but no warships inside the actual harbour. There's obviously aircraft during the day though. Also it was a pretty long journey submerged, so I would have to have surfaced inside the harbour to refresh air and batteries.
I see you were surfaced at night, so it must be reasonably safe. Before I died from aircraft I was taking fire from merchant ships. So I guess you'd have to surface somewhere they couldn't see you. It's certainly a trickier place than somewhere like Freetown.
When I reload I'm just going to stick to my patrol grid. It was nice seeing New York but there weren't enough targets to justify going in again. I'm sure my crew will appreciate it :D

HT would be the Harbour Traffic mod. You can get it from http://u-boot.realsimulation.com/. Click on "SH3 Downloads" then "SH3 Mods (General Section)" and you'll find it there. It's an essential mod in my view :)
Can't help with Ocean Madness. It would be in the list of mods thread in the SH3 Mods workshop, but that list has vanished
I lived for a short time in Brooklyn Heights after college. That Brooklyn Bridge shot, & even the classic Lady Liberty shot kinda got to me. Brought back memories of hiking across the bridge in a suit to make a job interview because I couldnt afford the subway.
I stopped outside the harbor in my one & only Type IX drumbeat mission to pick off emerging merchants. Had I known the city was modeled so well, I might have taken the risk, tied up at dock, & taken a look around to see if Montegue St., & Bob Dylan's dad still lived there.
Thanks for the pictures.

The Brooklyn Bridge is three miles across from entrance to entrance, I know because Ive seen every step.

Unfortunatlly it's not modeled past the Manhattan Bridge and doesn't make it to the GW on the Jersey side. Made me want to stop for a slice of Pizza or a Kinish.
I know, I live in Manhattan and was so disappointed to see only the lower 10 or so streets modeled... Noticable landmarks are the Statue of Libery, Ellis Island, Governors Island, Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, and the City Hall building... but it doesnt go up to Midtown where the Empire State Building is...
