I just tried to restart a career in october of 1939 in an IXB, and ..well.. the wind has just left my sails. Im not very far into my first patrol and im already bored. Soo.. i thought for tickles and grins i thoguht id post a poll..

Personnaly i like starting late war, early war just isnt challenging to me. Survival early war doesnt seem liike an issue to me, its all about tonnage. Not only that but you don't have as many cool toys to play with. Granted you can edit your basic.cfg and get those toys that early in the war, but what fun would that be?

Personally ive never thought of starting at any other time besides 1939. I always go from the start and see how far i can get.

Now i start when the mediteranean bases open up.. Beginning 1942 or early 1943 is when i begin my campaigns and i rarely survive past 2-3 patrols. NYGM did a great job in the Med, and i get my arse kicked and have to abort at least 1-2 patrols. No sunbathing for me :sunny:

I like to start from the very begining and work my way up. Besides commanding the IIA-IID is cool, pity they didn't come with more torpedoes as i would like to try this boat out in 1943/44 and see how she performs against a better equiped enemy.

I am now having more of a bash at 1943

This is my first career so I started at the beginning. The II boat seems toy-like compared to the VII and IX, and I remember having to cruise submerged all the time just to have enough fuel to return to base. Never mind about the pathetic tonnages although we'll chalk that up to the II's reduced war load. Worst of all was the green crew, seems they needed to rest almost constantly. Still once I got the VII it was a happy time.

January 1942 for me at the moment . You can still build up a descent crew before all hell breaks loose .

Early war for me too nice to sail around surfaced for a while before getting your conning tower blown off every time you surface later in the war. Also more fun with the deck gun then before everybody has one :yep:

I'm running concurrent careers from each of the three starting flotillas in 1939. Since I'm using SH3 Commander my kaleuns eventually retire (or die, of course). At that point I'll start a new career for each one, so of course as the war progresses I'll be starting new careers later and later.

Linear campaigns for me - one at a time and sequential.

My first career started in Sep 39 and finished through retirement in Apr 41.
My second career started in May 41 and ended through death in Jan 43.
My current career started in Feb 43 (I've finished one patrol).

i always start early, but i modify my campaign so that i spend more time in base during early war to make it pass faster.

Always as early as possible with at least 5-6 missions with a Type II A & D

Then having a blast with VIIs around the UK and the Med!

The boring stuff starts with the IXs on those long patrols down to the end of the world (Freetown). In one career I took my IXB in the Med and had a really great time for ~8-10 missions.

Then, in 1944 things get interesting again with the XXI :yep:

I tend to get very used to the "time" that it is in WaW - so it's hard for me to get used to a different "time zone" than they have there.

Otherwise, I like starting in 1942 or 1943, since it's really the breaking point as far as difficulty. I honestly prefer late-war play, since it's often more a game of survival than anything.

Im ran out of room to list my boats. :damn:

The loss of U-189 hurts the most.

once i get the VIIB it's a good time, i'd rather have a chance then scrambling for my life tbh.

At first I had a lot of early war careers. My first career started in 39 and retired in late 40. The next one I started in mid-40 and so on, gradually starting later and later. Eventually I followed that all the way to the end, with the last career in the sequence ending in death in late 44.

Recently I tried to to back and restart in 41, but the magic just wasn't there. Quite honestly it was boring.

Mostly I start now anywhere between Jan and Dec of 43.

I start at the beginning, most times. Right now playing in the WPL we are in 10/39 so we are having our way with the tommie's. Of coarse that will change later on. We had our first Online convoy game played last weekend. Had some technical problems but while it lasted it was a blast to play multiplayer , that mirrored the campaign. Very exciting stuff!

I like the period between 41-43. New equipment and flotillas to choose from and medium difficulty.

I like it more on the early years of war.But for the second time in a campain begining in midle/late 44, I can´t find any convoy's. For to 2 to 3 patrol's, niet. The last one I consumed all my diesel looking in the areas of the convoy routes.
Also I only got storm's during the patrol.
I'm using the improved convoy's mod. Don't know... :(

The early war is kindof boring in terms of combat. Escorts are slack-jawed, and there's no air cover. You can run wild and pull crazy sh*t. in late 42, onward, every patrol is a life & death struggle. Rather than storm into a convoy at flank, on the surface, you approach with trepidation, knowing that the attack may very well be your last. And, even if you're all out of torpedoes and on your way home, theres a good chance (especially in the med) that a plane fly over at night and drop ten DCs on your boat. Now that is INTENSE.

So, I want to play late war, because the kills really COUNT. But I don't like starting in late war because it's a little harsh to go into all that insanity with a green crew. So, I tend to start in 40 or 41 in order to give my boys a year or two to get trained up. I recently started in 39 in order to learn man targetting in relatively safe conditions. It's about to turn 42, we've got tonnes under our keel, and the crew is decked out. It's about to get fun. And, I have a certain love for my boat now that I wouldn't have if I had started now. I've built up a boat that I'm really afraid to lose.

P.S. I am saved right now, at PD, flank, running a hasty intercept on a task force that came right across my path midday. There are two cruisers and five DDs, and they WILL detect me. I didn't have time to estimate speed, so it's all hopes on a spread salvo. Wish me luck for tonight after work...
