The longest Eco-duct in Europe was opened last week by Queen Beatrix.
It connects a nature reserve of mainly heath fields with a wood reserve that has on purpose been neglected for the last twenty years. It has a length of 800 meters, spanning a national road, a railroad, a business park and sportscomplex (hockey, tennis, korfbal, golf) and is situated between Hilversum and Bussum.
It is a high tec structure, incorporating a foot path, bike path and a bridle path, a drainage system, protection against environmental light and different soil structure and overgrowth at a - criticised - price of € 18 M.
It forms apart of the Ecological Main Structure, a plan to connect all major nature reserves in Holland in order to make an exchange between all kinds of flore and fauna possible to preserve the biological diversity of our densly populated and almost completely man made (also most nature reserves!) country.
