Playing for over a year now, and this Game still amazes me :)

I'm out at sea in my Type IXB in October 1941, on my third patrol with GW 1.0/UC.

Finally, the planes have returned - after seeing no planes whatsoever in my last 3 patrols, I have been chased under by PBYs 3 times on this patrol. Each time, I have actually seen them far enough away to spot them myself in my binoculars and actually have some time to decide what to do before they were upon me - this time, I decided to crash dive and made it under with only minor damage to my topside locations.

As I was about to surface at dusk 4 hours later, I heard some very faint screws on my hydrophone sweep. I surfaced, repaired the damage and took off to intercept what turned out to be a lone British coastal freighter. My first torpedo was a dud, so I fired another one, only to see it malfunction as well. Determined not to let this one get away, and since the winds were light enough at 3m/s to allow use of my deck gun, I decided to surface and fight it out with her, even though she was armed. (I know, a questionable judgment call but I felt it was necessary for crew morale under the circumstances)

I took her by surprise, and although she managed to get off a couple of poorly aimed shots I was able to destroy her only gun with my third or fourth shot. Somewhere along the way though, she had snapped on a searchlight and now had me lit up.

I hit her a few times with my deck gun, setting her on fire in several places and punching a few holes along her waterline for good measure. Then, just to see if I could, I manned my heavy flak gun and tried to see if I could shoot out her searchlight. Sure enough, about 10-15 shots later, I was rewarded with a small secondary explosion and the searchlight went dark. It was soooo coool looking :)

I broke out the bottles I found in the conning tower and rewarded my flak crew with some of their favorite adult beverage. Soon afterwards, the freighter heeled over and slipped beneath the waves.

Man, I love finding new things to do in this game even after all this time :)

My favorite thing to strap onto my boat, is a 3.7 cm flak gun.

The first one, just sucks.

The second one aint so bad. Its continous fire.

The final one, rocks. Two barrels, continous fire. So in the case of aircraft, your never caught with a silent heavy flak gun trying to reload. It shoots farther then the 2 cm heavy flak gun too i think, not to mention hits harder.

On top of that its mulipurpose with the AP rounds. Its really quite useful on smaller ships. Combine that with your deck gun, and you got some good firepower on the surface for light merchants.

I like the one you get towards the end of the war. Four barrels unleashing hell. Imagine you had one of those in the beginning of the war.

The planes would be afraid of U-boats for the next 3 years...

I also love my Deck-Gun. I usually chase smaller Ships with this one. Or "air" the slow sinking ones.
Just yesterday once more the Gun proved to be an amazing tool.
After two (one Mag./One Imp.) Torpedos, a C2 was listing to starboard, ever so slowly; but refused to sinkl. And since i was impatiente and not to mention a little edgy; in the middle of the Damned Channel, i ordered the crew to "air" the
C2.
After only 6 Shells; all lined up pretty along the already sunken part of the Hull, she sunk swift. Rolled over and went down. Yay for the deck gun! :rock:

The 37 does a nice job on small and coastal freighters, and smaller ships- make sure you load AP though. Save the main gun ammo for the bigger stuff.

The FK M 42 Twin best all around; longer range that the 20mm, too.

I seem to always get killed before I can enjoy this one ... (usually by planes).

Sigh...




(Damn! There's a plane on my S-boat in my sig! That's got to be bad karma, right?)

The FK M 42 Twin best all around

The M 42 is awesome. I remember the first career I lived long enough to get one, and happened across a tug in the North Sea. I thought might as well check this thing out. Seas were rolling a bit, range 2000 meters, and I just fired short bursts as the muzzle swung up and down over the target. I couldn't even tell if I was hitting him. After maybe a dozen bursts the tug blew up. Great weapon in this sim, not that there's much chance to use it by the time you can get it, but very effective when you can.

I would't drink the stuff in the conning tower (or avoid smoking afterwards), get the stuff under the skipper's berth :)
