Best ISP in the UK?

To UK residents. Which is the best ISP over here or who would you recommend? I have been with AOL :down: and want to switch over to someone else who doesn't have bloatware software as AOL does, not to mention doesn't have some pain in the butt customer service call centre in India. Any suggestions? I don't download loads and loads and would be happy with a connection speed of 2mb-4mb. Recommendations please. :)

I use tiscali-not had any problems with them though you get locked in for 12 months.

been with them for over 2 years now and am very happy. Good service and response to email (I've never had to telephone them about a problem) and recently I was upgraded from 1mb to 2.2mb for free.
Uncaped 2.2mb adsl braodband/12 email aliases/web space/newsgroups/modem etc etc
total = £23.99 per month. Not the cheapest around but deffo sounds better than some of the stories I hear about AOhell. Buy cheap, buy twice :hmm:
Plus some of the residential deals are getting silly now.

BT Yahoo never had any isssues they even changed our entire line to 8 meg which ment re wiring the entire exchange for the residents of our entire road.

And whats more they tell you when they are testing the lines and how long for not only that they dont say oh we will give you 8 megs garenteed and then when they cant they swallow it back.
So they are honest.

I'm with Tiscali, have been for about 5 years - never had any problems.

I pay £19.97 for 1Mb unlimited.

I know Tiscali says £14.99 for the same but I am sure there is a limit set by them, at least fair usage. Nothing like that in mine.

If I am wrong about Tiscali I might give them a go.

I can't wait to get my MAC code from AOL and tell them where to go. The AOL software is the most appalling bloatware that I have ever come across. AOL are the king poo poo.

You're right - the speed you're quoted by your ISP is a maximum which will fade off with distance from the exchange. I've got a friend who pays for 24mb but gets about 8mb at their house, the nearest exchange is about 3/4 a mile away.

On the speed limit issue I have found a website here in the UK that can tell you based off your location/postcode the fastest download speed you can attain based off the exchange you use and how far away you are from it. If you really want to do your homework you can call BT and find out when they are upgrading your local exchange. I know that for my area the current limit based off my exchange and distance from it is 3mb.

no problems with tiscali broadband once i got rid of the cheap and nasty filters they supplied. i could have made better quality ones myself with a pair of side cutters and an old coat hanger.
