Of course, you kind of need carriers that are large enough to deploy those JSFs from as well. That means you're stuck waiting for the CVF (Queen Elizabeth?) class carriers, which should be ready at some point within 2012-2015.

Those can take off our Tarawa and Wasp class Amphibious assault ships which have a flight deck comparable to a Invincible class ASW Carrier.

They are, but the Invincibles are too small to field an adequate number of JSFs. The CVFs for the RN are needed to have an adequate air arm at sea.

Would be nice to have A naval air arm, full stop... :damn:

a few jsf's would be much more effective then what the carriers are currently using to down enemy fighters, which is currently stern looks and abusive language.

Still I think that if it was operating with a US CVBG it could provide a good number of F/A-35Bs if they got rid of their AEW and some ASW aircraft since the USN has arguably the better aircraft for those roles.

V/STOL JSF waste of time.
Since we are getting a big ship we should get the CTOL version for teh RN and teh V/STOL for the airforce.

Since we are getting a big ship we should get the CTOL version for the RN and the V/STOL for the airforce. Actualy the RN would need a STOBAR (Short Take Off But Arrested Recovery) or CATOBAR (Catapult Assisted Take Off But Arrested Recovery) for carrier work CTOL jet would tend to get wet... very wet... :know:
Why does the RAF use V/STOL? Is it for small air strips and such like the USMC trains to use?

Yep.
I think that makes sense...The CTOL Navy version (ie US NAVY one) should be used by the RN as a fleet defender and strike aircraft. Something that you need with CVs IMHO.
The RAF could use teh V/STOL version for battlefield strike, the CTOL F-35 or a version of as a Tornado replacement..and Typhoon for multirole.

Here's the thing though...the CVF's are going to be built WITHOUT catapults or arresting gear (though it will have the capability to have these installed in the future...so, even the F-35C would go crashing off of its deck and get up close and personal with the Atlantic. Therefore, the RN NEEDS to buy the F-35B VSTOL version to have functional capability.

So the RN plans on having a guy run out on deck and grab the JSF by the landing gear to slow it down and haul it on deck like in the old days? :-j

or how about they just install the arresting gear and catapults.
I dont know why we dont buy oneof the non-nuc ones plus some f14s from the usn-it would be better than most of the competition and available NOWWhat has this got to do with Astute's though?

Because those were built in the 1950s and 1960s. USS Kitty Hawk was laid down nearly 50 years ago, JFK 42 years ago. I know they kicked ass back in the day but do you really want a ship that old?
I guess you'd have to look at upgrading, but then again you'd also have to look at the cost of upgrades vis a vis getting a new carrier with all mod cons fitted.
After all, look what the Canadians did with our Oberons!

Kirk: Stand by to execute emergency landing plan..."B."
[a brief pause]
Chekov: What's emergency landing plan "B?"
Scotty: I don't have a clue.
Kirk: [on Comm system] "B" as in Barricade.
Scotty: He can't be serious.
