Okay, without actually playing it and observing reviews and threads I can gather that the crew speaks German, so

Kann zu alles spreche deutsch, oder nicht?

Ich habe lernst deutsch fur funf jahre. Klasse ist sehr langwielig.

So, can you, and if you can how does it help you (excuse the pun) submerse yourself into the game?

After 6 years in the Navy, I can get my face slapped in 17 different languages. When I get miffed I have a tendency to curse in Russian, knowing no one will understand. One time I was doing a particularly difficult circuit install in West Hollywood and started cussing in Russian. when I looked up, there was this really nice old, obviously Russian lady looking at me with a schocked expression on her face.

I studied German for one year back in High School. I learnt how to say my name and ask for cake "Kann ich kuchen haben". That's about it though.

But you can't sail in a German U-boat with a crew full of English speakers. Especially with the English (American) voices they included in the game. Hehe.

Anyway, despite being very limited in German, after playing the game for a while, you understand what's being said, or at least the jist of it. And for me, it's just more immersive.

Now, playing with German text, that's totally another matter...

I understand and speak german fluently.
But perhaps the reason for this is that actually I am a german. :D
English is a whole different matter, though. ;)

Well, in Denmark we learn both english and german in school - at least a couple of years. At least, that was when I was at school, and I don't believe it's changed.

I can understand most german, IF it's not some dialect, at least enough to know that the danish translation of Das Boot sucks!

Speaking it is a different matter :), but I can get along. Hey, if you can order 2 beers in a language, not everything is lost! :()1:

I like to play a game in my native langugage (i.e. german) and at the same time have the best immersion.

As for other games I try to avoid getting the german version because translation always loses something of the original "spirit" of the game.
(hehe - of course that is only because other games are in englisch - french for example would get me lost)

For me that is the same with the Movies, sometimes the translation from EN to GE is absolutly terrible and takes away alot from the feeling.

I was fortunate enough to have grown up in a german family... instant second language!
I speak like a Hamburger, but my reading/writing needs some practice.

I couldn't imagine playing SH3 in English... well maybe I could, but it would suck.

being a Swede, or scandinavian for that matter, we share the same branch of the language tree, known as the germanic languages. Hence many of our words sound similar, and the way we put sentences together are similar. As for speaking german, maybe after 12 glasses of weissbier

I speak German. After two years living in Salzburg and another year cycling around Germany, I can get by. Certainly enough to understand what's going on in the game.

Well, at least I can't speak German anymore. I pick it up surprisingly well from text, and I can often understand it nicely from speech as well (never had much problem with SHIII in German, for instance). Strangely, my pronounciation is also mostly intact - but I just can't string more than two words together on my own :nope:

Thanks. I do try, but usually it takes a lot of dictionary searching to find the right words. Living in Germany/Austria definitely helped me to learn more quickly.

I know 'Uboote Deutsche', and a couple of curses...in fact I can mutter curses in about four different langauges :D Comes in handy at work when I can't swear at the customers :D :D :D

As for my other half, well...she's not so good, in fact, I think the only German she knows translates into 'I am a Wellington Boot' which is not that useful I guess....

When i was in S. Korea i met a few Americans and one told me that he was ashamed that he was speaking only 1 Language and where ever he goes on the World he will be greated in His language. So what's the situation in the US ?
Here in Switzerland the kids learn a second or third language as soo as the elementary shool (6 - 11 Y old) and in the US where they do have so many hispanic Ppl. what are they learning in shool ?

I was working for 7 1/2 Year around the World, sure i speak only a few (6) languages but whenever i was able to talk to the people in their own language half of the work was already done. Sure my English is far from being perfect but it enables me atleast to patrticipate in this forum, like others who talk German do participate in the German Ubi forum.
