Hey Avon Lady there are some great DOS games! ;)
Actually, I kinda understand mr.werner. When I found out I could play AOD again I was very happy!
Believe it or not, this little game (5,000kb!) is as immersive, to make you feel like you are part of a war effort, as SH3...maybe even more so... *dodges flying tomatos*
I guess they both have pros and cons.

"Call me when SHIII..."
Or not.
Don't let the door hit you in the rump on the way out.
Wolfpacks in AoD were not at all realistically implemented.
I have this guide for SH1 on my site if anybodys interrested (might work for COAD too :) )

Holy Moley that looks complicated! Won't SH1 work in dosbox? There's a new version out now.

SH works in DOs box perfectly(i tried 0.63 and latest 0.65) BUT u need BEAST for cpu becose it is so slow....
to make things clear..he works i.e no bugs, crashes, sound troubles...U can even view all videos included( i have gold edition) BUT when u sail out u will be disapointed becose u dont have P4 anymore..lol...dos box make roughly 486/40Mhz or maybe slightly faster if u turn on frame skip... :damn:
This is becose CPU emulates all:sound card,VGA card, and all calculations.... :damn: :o

Awwww, and I was hoping for a hug and kiss good-bye.
Well I wrote a note to myself to call you when the SH gets wolfpacks, but only thing is since SH4 is suppose to be about the Pacific theatre I guess don't expect my call until 2010. HF anyway.
Your devoted suckass,
Tom
As a WaW member, I don't need no stinking dynamic comms! I get plenty of them from my flottilla commanders

yes AOD works perfectly with dosbox.65...you might need to get a pre-configured AOD version, there's a link at the dosbox site. ;)

You know what, I still havn't made up my mind about that, I'm finding it all so very confusing
I see some comments about resolution and the fact it's a DOS game, don't forget graphics have nothing to do on how good a game is.
Heck, I remember playing a very immersive/realistic WWI flight sim on pen and paper!

Yes SH3 is not perfect it has its faults but for me i couldn't go back to AOD, i mean i played that game for like 2yrs then tried out sh1 then 2 and now 3.
Still i got an old Pentium growing cobwebs, who knows i might install AOD one day.

I still played AOD while playing SHII, mainly because SHII had no career mode, and I consider that the deciding factor.
SHIII does, and with all the mods and tools I've installed I'm happy as a clam. You couldn't pay me to go back. Well, if you paid me I might, but...

SH2 did have a career mode Steve, just a canned career not what we have now.

Hmmm. I'm still wary of SHIII due to the Starforce thing, so I'm sympathetic when someone goes back to AOD. I might get DOS box and install AOD and SHI if it's not too complicated. That's the big thing - if getting an old game to work on DOS box takes too many steps then it's just not worth it to me.
Meanwhile I'm playing SHII.
But I'm edging closer to SHIII - I'm hoping they'll introduce a Starforce-free "gold" edition. :D

Okay... As a SH3 noob... I can forgive someone droping back to AOD as it was my *favorite* sub game until now. I was extremely depressed when I upgraded the PC/OS and found I could not get it to work. After many hours of effort, I threw away the game, and moved on to WWII air sims (after many tears lossed).
I still am a very noobish player on SHIII as I have not had the time to play, but AOD *was* the bomb in it's day.
Some day when work stops intruding into my real life, I expect to be a good sub captain..... and I may still re-buy AOD to have something lite to have fun with.

SH1 in dosbox is very slow (maybe not if you have a 3+GhrzCPU), but AOD works perfectly. As for the steps, this is what I have to type in dosbox to get AOD running.
mount d d:\aod\
d:
aod
So basicaly only 3 steps, very easy stuff.
As for SHIII and starforce, there is an easy way to remove it. But I can't talk about it here for fear of getting hit by lighting... :dead:
Again, I'm sure you can figure it out :hmm: , PM me if you can't.

Aces of the Deep was very immersive.
Actually SH III could have beaten that feeling if not for the many glitches in the first versions...

Actually AOD was, and is, a very good sim, but it's the visual and sonic immersion that glues me to SHIII. Call it eye candy if you like, and say it's not worth anything, but when I follow the flottengebleiter out of Wilhelmshaven or enter the Kiel Canal, and see all the traffic coming and going, I'm back in the real navy again, and though it's not the real thing it sometimes sure seems like it.

AOD ????
I personaly prefer another simulation of two submarines with a depth charge between them. That one easily beats AOD you sukkas :D

When will these crazy kids learn that graphics don't make the game :nope:
But I must say...Having just finnished a couple of patrols in Aces and now returning to SHIII. SHIII gets my vote for better sim
But not ( just ) because of the graphics!!
