I do.....
Silent Hunter !

When this game first came out it had nearly all the right qualities and this made SH the Subsim to have above any other. It made its name and became popular even with gamers who were not naval game orientated like myself ! :ping:

The graphics and gameplay was limited but only due to slow CPU and RAM spec of the time. I had a pentium 100Mhz, 4x Speed CD-ROM, 1gig HDD and 16 meg of RAM back in 96 ! :rotfl:

With todays high spec PC's the idea to return to the Pacific theatre with USN vs IJN role is a very good move by the Production/Dev team, and I am certain that it will become a BIG seller.

Sinking a Japanese aircraft carrier for example leaves one with a sense of gaming satisafaction hardly equalled by any other game. :|\

With hunting grounds like the Java Sea, Sulu Sea, China Sea, Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Solomon Islands, Truk Atoll, Marshall and Gilberts islands and not forgetting Japanese waters etc SHIV will offer a wide and varied field of combat to the descerning submariner. ;)

Because Japan is basically a lot of islands surrounded by open sea they rellied very heavily upon maritime activity for their survival by import and export of guns, munitions, food, men, material equipment etc and henceforth possessed a large Imperial Navy and merchant shipping fleet. :yep:

Japan was severly crippled by the USN SubComPAc fleet during the later stages of the war in that they were starved of all of aforementioned supplies via the excellent patrolling USN Submarines, their stalwart crew and expertise that jubilantly sent most of the Japanese shipping to the bottom of the oggin. :smug:

To be able to re-enact some of these most historic maritme WWII moments again but this time with superb graphics, sound and gameplay will be something that original SH gamers should look forward to. :sunny:

Heres to SHIV and a Gato or Baleo class sub to do the business in..yehaaaw

I had that game, I enjoyed it but was annoyed at the how easy the escorts seemed o be able to find me, and worse how easy my sub was damaged. But on the othe side of the coin, I put 4 eels in to the Kongo, then shelled her from a way off (at night of course) and ended up sinking her, got the medal of honour for it.

Silent Hunter just seemed to be an updated version of Silent Service to me. Silent Service is the game that really set the standard.

They had the exact same feature set.

I played Silent Service on my Peanut (IBM PCjr 128K ram).

9 Torpedoes to sink the Yamato.

The December 7th 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor damaged or destroyed 19 capital ships of the USN's pacific fleet. Luckily all of here Aircarft carriers were out on training but this still left aged and outgunned forces of the Asiatic fleet as the first line of defence against the oncoming might of the IJN....The 51 Submarines of the Pacific fleets were ordered to " Execute total unrestricted air and submarine warfare against Japan. To sink or destroy enemy shipping where-ever encountered"
or...to become a Silent Hunter, and the rest is history.

Again for those not used to a USN Pacific theatre of war, here are some of the Sub Class's and their torpedo tube accomodation along with some other data.

S-Class 4 fwd 1 aft - flank speed 14 kts - 1 x 4in deck gun
test depth 200 feet
Barracuda Class 4 fwd 2 aft - flank speed 17 kts - 1x5in deck gun
test depth 200 feet
Narwhal Class 4 fwd 2 aft - flank speed 16 kts - 2x6in deck guns
test depth 328 feet
P-Class 4 fwd 2 aft - flank speed 18 kts - 1x4in deck gun
test depth 250 feet
Salmon Class 4 fwd 4 aft - flank speed 19 kts - 1x4in deck gun
test depth 256 feet
T-Class 6 fwd 4 aft - flank speed 19 kts - 1x5in deckgun
test depth 200 feet
Gato Class 6 fwd 4 aft - flank speed 20 kts - 1x4in deckgun
test depth 300 feet
Balao Class 6 fwd 4 aft - flank speed 20 kts - 1x5in deckgun
test depth 400 feet
Tench Class 6 fwd 4 aft - flank speed 20 kts - 2x5in deckguns

Mk18-2 Electric 40 kts - 500 lb warhead - Aug 1944 onwards

Most subs were fitted with 2 or 3 .50 cal machine guns, 20mm AA guns or 40mm cannon ( sometines combined )

Radar equipment:
SD - air use 6 to 10 miles radius
SJ - Surface
Imp SJ - surface
A-Scope - surface
PPI - surfsace
APR-1 R/d - surface ( radar detector)

Japanese Ship Losses to US Subs.

US Subs attacked 4,112 mechant ships during 1,474 war patrols.

Also:
201 Thousand tons of IJN ships
as well as
4 Shinano class aircraft carriers
4 Chuyo Class Escort Carriers
1 Kongo Class Battleship
9 light cruisers
38 Destroyers and 23 Submarines.

The Yamato Class BB is the Biggest BB ever built at 71659 tons and I came accross it a few times in SHI, I never sank her but crippled her the once but was still pleased to have had a go at the mighty Yamato !
ps. it will take 6 maybe 10 torpedos hits to sink this ship...its anti-torpedo belt was 12 foot thick in places !!

more on the Yamato can be read here

yes it does appear to be wrong on my behalf should read 201 thousand tons. slight typing error there, never mind.
The information was sourced from :
page 6 of US Pacific Submarines in WWII by William P Gruner.

Naval Ships Assessment No. Displacement (tons)
Confirmed 201,540,192
Probable 13,037,434
Total 214,477,626

The total confirmed and probable Japanese Naval and Merchant shipping sunk by USN Submarines was 1,393 ships of 5 million 583 thousand 400 tons. This was 54.6% of all Japanese ships sunk during WWII.
Statistically the average number of ships sunk per patrol was 0.944
number of ships damaged or crippled is unrecorded.

In 1944 a common saying in Singapore was that " one could walk from Singapore to Tokyo on American periscopes " :D

ps, I'll edit the other post now.

Ah, OK, gotcha, thanks.

There were 3 heavy cruisers sunk by US subs and eight light (as confirmed by JANAC) Kako for S-44, Maya and Atago for Darter and Dace?

FWIW, here's a thread I've started over at our site for essentially the same purpose, just more info on the Pacific sub war :)

Actually only a small number of S-boats had the stern tube, and none of them ever saw combat.

In SHI that was fixed by one of 'Hawk's Silent Hunter Utilities'.
