Hi all.

Im a fairly new player, with a couple questions I cant find the answer too anywhere, even various FAQs, so I thought Id ask the experts :-)

1 - I have read the "intercepting targets" guide,, and tried to use the method by 'Dantenoc' from teh manul wiki, but I do not have the Protractor tool on my nav map. How do I get it ? I only have the compass, marker and square etc. NO protractor.
(not that I understood the method very well though :-(

2 - My hydrophone guy reads out a contact, and then never mentions it again. How can I get regular updates from him ?
I just cant seem to find any contacts, unless I see them from the bridge. I need some help doing it all from sub-surface without using the 'gods-eye' view all the time.

3 - In my 'awards' section after a patrol, I can never give promotions. It always says I have to complete a patrol, but Ive done 3! I tried to sail home, instead of 'return to base', but that didnt seem to work either. How close do I have to be? How do I dock and is that how I get a 'complete' status inorder to promote my crew ?

I hope you guys can help.
Many thanks.
Bones.

Get Patch 1.4b then the "Follow Nearest Sound Contact" Will Work.

Read the Manual for Information how to Order The Sonar operator This.

To "Colplete" a Patrol, You Have to Be Within 25 Km of the Base. But i Always drive Into Harbour Were the Band Welcomes Me. Then i hit "ESC" And Then "Dock at *Nameofbasehere*". That Does the Trick for Me.

There's a built-in protractor in the nav map - to see it, you have to click on the "help" question mark [?] at the top right. A better (IMO) protractor is available as a mod; look in the SH3 mods forum or you can probably find a link to it on the subsim front page (look for a link called "custom mods" or something like that - sorry, can't remember exactly what it's labeled).

The 1.4 version number should appear on the load screen, yes. Sounds like you have the right version.

Cheers; welcome aboard.

Regarding #2, bear in mind that the sonar man has to gain some experience before distingushing ship further than 1000 m away. Usually this is the first person after the watch warrant ofiicer that I give megals, promotions etc.

Thanks guys.

I just installed 1.4b (i was on 1.4)

Now I have new map tools (protractor) plus my sonar man calls out lots.
Also there seems to be little improvements all over.

Thankyou !

PS. yes, I shall watch his experience. :-)

The requirements needed to be considered having "Completed a Patrol" are :

1) You must have sunk more than 25000 T worth of shipping (Patrol Critical).
2) Patroled your assigned Patrol Grid for 24 hours (Not patrol critical as N° 1).
3) Have expended all torpedo's and radioed BdU and received a "Return To Base" Order (Not patrol critical as N° 1)

You can get away with not completeing N°'s 2,3 but if you wanted to be 100% spot on then all of the above would apply.

25k tons ? :o

oh dear. I made 6k tons and was pleased with that  , although I think i need to ignore the smaller armed trawlers, until I get a deck gun :-)

Hmmm, so I need to sail back to port and click on 'dock at' instead of 'return to..'. I see. Thats a pain. Its nice to end a mission soon as im done, and get back to base, but i guess its far more realistic, especially trying to get away from a warzone once your out of fish !

ok, thanks again, ill try that.

Question - Is the 'M' key the only way to see my incoming radio reports ?

ah ok, thankyou.

I reckon the only thing in the entire game thats a real bug-bear, is that you dont get an audible warning or beep or alarm of some sort when messages come in. Im always missing things and conacts etc when TC stops for a message, but Im busy reading or making a drink and dont notice, so my pc is sat in normal (slow) time doing nothing, whilst 'I' think its whizzing me to my Destination.

Is there a tweak or mod just to give audible warnings ?

Gibs,

Where do you get this info? I have never heard of the 25KTon benchmark. It sounds kind of unreasonable.

Just asking.

The number of medals, their type, and the number of promotions you are awarded --- all depend on your patrol tonnage. You are only awarded the medals that your crew currently holds the prerequisites for. So if no one has anything, you're going to get a bunch of uboat badges, and no iron crosses.

I forget specifics. Something like:

2000 tons per uboat badge
5000 tons per iron cross
8000 tons per gold cross
10000 tons per promotion

They are additive, but you'll get at least one of each medal possible before it uses up the spare tons for lower medals. I believe it listed in the configuration files, so you can change everything down to 20, and spend 2 hours delving out medals after your first patrol.

Thanks Tycho, That explains things nicely.

The medals an promotions are driven by renown, however to get enough renown to kick in a promotion =~25000 T. As stated above it can be tweaked, but 25K is with stock files.
