Is it just my installation or is it normal to have directional sound when at periscope depth and when doing a 360 degree scan here my own sub sound and aproching destroyers. I can have the scope just below the surface and can tell where an oncoming destroyer is.

The underwater sound detectors were either inside the lower hull of the U-boat (GHG=Gruppenhorchgerät) or on the deck of the hull (KDB=Kristalldrehbasisgerät). The type XXI-boats were equipped with the so-called Balkongerät, which was installed on the lower front hull. These devices would actually work effectively as soon as the boat submerged and the sound of waves crashing against the hull stopped and the noisy diesel engines went silent. As soon as the boat was submerged the main cause of interference was gone. Going deeper than persicope depth helped in minimizing the interferences from sounds on and near the surface but the sound detection devices definitely worked at periscope depth.

I understand how sonar works. What I meant was that if you are at PD and doing a 360 degree scan, the noise you here as you move the scope around shouldn't change. I could tell there was a destroyer at about 270 degrees even before the scope was out of the water by just listening to the background sound in the game as i spun the scope.

I think it is a bug in the game.

Ah, now I understand what you mean. My fault. :damn:

I've never noticed this, but then I don't use the scope when below periscope depth anyway.

It's an ambient sound effect. Think of it as being that the dd that's about to ram you is so noisy that you can hear it without the sonar.

Why are you at periscope depth using the scope if you can hear the DD?! :o You know they can spot the scope and will shoot you, right?
