I go to my assigned patrol area, due the 24hrs, then decide where to go from there, until the lack of fuel or torpedos forces my return to base. Yes, I do return to my home base.

I stay at my assigned grid for most of the patrol. That way I assure realistically low scores.

2) Followed by the closest enemy harbour
3) Closest milk-cow / return to base

I now go straight to my patrol grid seeing my patrol grids now are of the East coast of US but I do try to hug a convoy route as much as possible to get there.
