I have to pass on my excitement with my first manual targetting hit. I'm in the channel, it's '39, and about 5am. I had a hell of a time getting here (direct hit by a spitfire on the stern, flooding, etc). I spotted an armed trawler in the dawn, headed straight for us. Down to PD, and wait. She's a light ship, and not really worht the torp, but, it feels like i might not make it back from this patrol so I'll take what I can get. At PD, i start collecting data using the 3.15 minute rule. 4 data points yields excellent TMA - I have her at 6.5 knots, and lined up for a stern shot at 90 degrees, fast T1, shallow. Using the stuff I've read in the last little while (thx Wazoo, Threadfin, Irish1958, Konovalov) I managed to fire a shot that led her perfectly. She never saw the steam trail, and it hit her just fore of the engine room. Bam! The little bastard practically jumped out of the water. I'm off now at silent, and she's looking grim - AH!! Just sank her. She rolled over...will be scrapin the bottom soon. 530 tonnes never felt so good.
Anyway. Very happy with my first manual targetting experience. I can't wait to hit a convoy. At least with the 90 abeam shots, it's not nearly as hard as I thought. I'll have to learn how to fire moving/angled shots, but for now I'm very happy to fire spreads abeam. Power to manual targetting! As a virtual-Kaleun, this is my second birthday.
