I am upgrading video cards. Which one will not give the white smoke of the NVidia GForce FX5200? :stare:

I want to spend no more than $100USD. :yep:

My specs are: Win XP 1 Gig RAM, 1.8GHz P4

Can someone please give some good advice? I don't want to get a card that won't work. Already spent $200 USD on Memory upgrades so far....

For around $100, the GeforceFX 5700 128 ram might be around the $120 mark, or the Geforce 6200 256 ram $138 costs here in New Zealand. Ive used both these cards they work well for SH3. Only upgraded to a 6800GT so i could run Oblivion game.

Do those NVidia cards give the "white smoke"?

No. Grey & black smoke.

any FX 5000 series Vid card gives you white smoke (problem with the Particle driver). All GF 6000 and up cards are fine (black smoke).

Thanks Guys!

I do seem to have some problems with framerates near land since I downloaded RuB 1.45z.

Will a better Vid card improve this?? :hmm: :yep:

The FX5700 will give you black smoke. Mine does.

Why not try an ATI Card? They work well, and I have always had good luck with them, I can't really say that about NVIDEA.

Of course its your preference.

Awesome! Since the dowload of RuB 1.45z, framerates near land have dropped noticibly. :nope:

My enjoyment of SH3 has suffered because of it...

save up an extra 200-300 dollars and get a 6800 gt or 7800 , 7600 or 7900 gt video card

or in my case save my 1200$ and buy 1 x1900xtx (secondary) and 1 x1900xtx(primary) and crossfire them :-j :D :D :D   cant get any problems on that i get minimum 250-300 fps in sh3 when looking at the harbour with 16xAF and 16xAA (ati crossfire super AA)

I was running my FX 5600 on 3 year old drivers. Anyway, I recently got a wild hair and tried the March 22 06 version, was pleasantly suprised to see it not chain reboot my computer like every other version I have ever tried has. But the end result is that I have white smoke now instead of black lol. I have had nVidia for as long as I can remember, but my next card will be anything else.

250-300 fps ???

I might be misunderstanding this, but a normal monitor won't even refresh that fast, right ? Normally they are below 100 , so why would having an fps of 250-300 be a good thing ?

As long as you have v-sync turned off your vid cards will run as fast as they can. It's not the best for image quality, but it's REALLY fast and gives you bragging rights. (For those of us who have enough free income to blow $1200 on video cards! :88) ) Turning v-sync on forces the video card to only refresh the image when the monitor is ready. So if your screen is running at 60hz your maximum fps is then 60. The great thing about a crazy SLI or Crossfire system is that you can turn on 8-16xAA and 16AF at 1600x1200 and enable v-sync to have perfect images. You'd have a rock solid 75 fps (on a higher end LCD of course) that never dips and has the best image quality ever seen.

But you'd have to live in a box because you couldn't aford rent that month!

If it was me I'd buy something like a 6800, 7800 board, or x800xl or 850xt. Something nice and mid range. It's only $200-250, and it will get you far more ahead of the game than the low end cards.

I don't worry much about frame rates in harbours. With GW/NYGM I get 25-28 fps even at the most dense. Game play runs smooth.

Where I run into trouble is when the large convoys show up and things other than graphic display start slowing down....so much so that it begins to interfer with game play.

i have a 21 inch High end LCD monitor costme a good 800+$ 2ms response time , ive played call of duty 2 on my 52 inch plasma with everything maxed out and i get a decent 60-80 fps v-sync is never on so i benchmark to know wut the most possible stable limit for my system is.

 My lil ol 1.2Ghz PIII with its FX5950 in port gives me 20~FPS, out to sea I get 50-70~FPS (depending on where I am at the time-Bridge/map).
And I have GW installed, cant complain :)
