ive just watched the first episode not bad some minor discrepencies in terminology i.e the ghost captain saying"get to your post "we dont have posts we have stations and the ratings wearing their kilick and po's badges on there number 8 uniforms submariners dont wear them at all its a skimmer thing but not bad for a drama

yes the first half was enjoyable (2nd half is tomorrow) but its important to understand that this is not trying to be 100% realistic ala das boot. its trying to tell a tale, which its doing very well.

watching the crew change as time starts to blur makes a pleasent change from the hardcore realism many have been trying for in war films.

The first part of Ghost boat was indeed very enjoyable and was refreshing to see something good on television for once. I am looking forward to the final part and no doubt it will be just a good as part one.

Anybody got any information on how they filmed the internal and external shots of the sub ?

My first thought was that they'd used the interiors of a restored sub of which I think there are only two British - Alliance ( Gosport) and Ocelot (Chatham ). Ocelot is too modern and Alliance was right at the end of the war. I've been in both boats and I couldn't pin it down to either.

My second thought was maybe they used an American sub ( of which there are many) tarted up with a lot of instruments and props to make it look British.

I have to admit that in the end both the the inside and outside may have been sets created specially for the film, or possibly a mixture of all of the above with some clever cutting.

Whatever route ( or routes) the film makers took I felt they had made it convincing

Any thoughts or clues anyone. ?

They're using the boat from the "U571" movie according to the Radio Times.

Ah thanks. There did appear to be some German looking bits and pieces around including the periscope. I thought at one stage they might even be using the Das Boot set. I've had a look at some movie shots of U571 and that does in fact look like the periscope in Ghostboat.

In the end my money was on a very good film set (just) but I couldn't see how a TV film had the budget to make their own set of that standard.

i believe its the u-571 boat but without all the over dramatic lighting.

All in all a good ending, I had a hunch that he was going to go like that.
One question though....Typhoons at Kalingrad?!
What are those Soviets, nuts? Those 'phoons should be up at Murmansk, not in the Baltic! How are you gonna break out and up to the Ice caps through the Baltic entry to the North Sea...the RN'll have that zipped up completely.

Failing that....good show

a lot of liberties were taken with technical facts, being factualy correct isnt the attraction of the drama but the story being told.

if you can put aside the incoreect technical aspects it was a good enjoyable show.

Oh don't worry, I'm used to shows taking liberties with facts, I watch ITV news ;) It was a damn good story, and like many have said, it's nice to have something like that on telly for a change instead of "Celebrity I'm a Fit Club get me out of here!" Or something like that...

The filming took place in Rome. All the interior shots where taken on a set.

What I saw of it last night wasn't bad at all. Hopefully it will be on again and I can watch both parts of it.

ive just seen it (it was taped)and i found it rather silly though as a fantasy sci fi thing i suppose thsts what you'd expect. It was unusual in being set in 1981 and 1943 rather than 1943 and 2006 but i suppose thats from the book too.Found the end a bit crap.
I couldnt quite figure out what the rating with the ear phones was listening to but it sounded like the pretenders.i wish they had those earphones still.the new ear plug types hurt my ears.
when they were giving orders i heard references to ship control.is this what they call the helmsman/quartermaster on a submarine?

Hmm, filmed in Italy, and using the U-571 set?

Sounds like a DeLaurentis production (or co-production), and he's not known for high production values.

I'll give it a shot, but I don't expect much.

In the RN it is, SCC - Ship Control Centre - iirc.
