by Joshua Slocum.

A real seafarer's book. I haven't read it since high school, now that I'm in my 60's it's time to get reaquainted.

A classic of epic proportions ! I will be rereading it soon

I am a sucker for solo sailing voyages.

Another favorite of mine is i.e.:

Bernard Moitessier's Around Cape Horn The logical route.

To my surprise (prejudice) Tania AeĆbi's "solo" was very enjoyable as well.

Although not around the world voyage yet a Favourite book of mine called "U-Boat Far From Home" by David Stevens. The epic voyage of U862 (IXD2) to Australia and New Zealand. Rumor has it some of the crew went inland one night in NZ and stole eggs and milked a farmers cow. That was never mention in the book though.

great read.

Not solo, but much more daring is "Over The Edge Of The World: Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation Of The Globe" by Laurence Bergreen. As the blurb says (in part);

"In September 1519 five ships and 260 men set sail......Almost exactly three years later, one battered ship and eighteen diseased men returned to Spain, their captain murdered..."

Fantastic book.

(Strangely enough, Captain Cook later died in very similar circumstances to Magellan)

Will have to read it. Currently reading Doenitz's memoirs.

I don't know, if it's about pirates or ocean cup races and everything in between, if it's about ships and the sea, it's worth turnin' a page.

Cheers mates,

Now we've got the Chinese in on the world explorer act too. The book 1421: The Year the Chinese Discovered America which looks into the possibility that Admiral Zheng He's Star Fleet under the Ming Dynasty may have curcumnavigated the globe before the Europeans.

The part where he used carpet pins to defend the ship was pretty funny. I also liked the imaginary pilot from Pinta who held the helm at night.

wikipedia:
Slocum again met with President Roosevelt in May 1907, this time at the White House in Washington. Supposedly, Roosevelt said to him, "Captain, our adventures have been a little different." Slocum answered, "That is true, Mr. President, but I see you got here first"

Can you believe I've never read this book?

As some of you may know I spent a large part of my time in my youth sailboat racing in one capacity or another.

Hell I thought the all night beat to Bimini was a rough trip.. (actually it was but it only lasted 12 hours). Somehow it always ended up being into the eye of the wind both ways

I will have to get this book a look. Wife works at the library so should be able to scare up a copy.

The book is in the public domain and it's available online. I like the 1901 illustrated edition at Internet Archive

I seemed to have picked up the worst time to bring back this thread. Hope the girl is alright and rescued soon  At least she has emergency equipment. Slocum didn't even know how to swim.

Yep, but a shame to have made it so far only to have her boat crippled. We'll probably be hearing about her again soon enough though :salute:
