Yep...that's it. 30 mm depleted uranium shells...nasty stuff if you're on the receiving end of it.
The sound the big 30mm makes was best described as "A fart from God." And with good reason :-j
Nice wiki article on the GAU-8 here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GAU-8_Avenger
The recoil force can be calculated by multiplying the muzzle velocity with the mass of the projectiles over one second (force = impulse per time). This gives an approximate recoil force of 30 kN. On the GAU-8/A product homepage the recoil force is stated as 10,000 pounds-force, or about 45 kN. The maximum combined output of the A-10 engines is 80 kN. Hence the recoil force of the gun is slightly more than half of the total thrust of the engines. While this is quite significant, it is not sufficient to stop the aircraft.

Hello,
i sure don't like even depleted Uranium bullets, poisoning the ground for some several 1000 years to come. If one of those things is being smashed the developing dust cloud will cause cancer for everyone who's near, let alone the effect of buried bullets in field and soils. Even "depleted" uranium is still hot enough. Kapitein, if you really have some rounds i'd be very careful ...
Reminds me of the answer from the US military staff on how sure it is that cluster bombs hit their target, or explode: "The only sure thing is cluster bombs will hit the bottom with a 100 % chance" lol.
Greetings,

Can you please put that in english? I honestly don't quite understand what you are saying after confirming to XabbaRus that you are in possession of a 30mm Gau-8 Avenger shell casing. Any chance of a nice digital photo closeup being posted here for us all here to admire?

Excellent. Perhaps if you can place it alongside an article such as a 4 pint milk container or something just so we can get an appreciation of size. Will await with anticipation.

I too await the result with anticipation - oh why can't the camera charge quicker!

Yeah, but with just about any other machine gun you can be pretty confident if you're inside a tank. That sucker, on the other hand, will punch right through one.

Sorry its a bit blurred it was done in a rush will post better ones in a few but this is the A-10 shell on the left, in the middle is a bog standard machine gun round and note to the right is the shell of the AK47S above.
http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/7492/footna101qb.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
To give a look on size i placed the A-10 round next to my foot, and its bigger than my foot.
Im a size 10 wich is about 29cm long i think my foot.
But there you have it.

Heres another two using a pepsi bottle to show how big the shell realy is, the bottle is the 1.5litre version so not the biggest one they do but certainly big enough.

A clearer picture than the one before showing just how big these rounds realy are.
Left the green shell is the one from the A-10
Middle is a round from a machine gun
Right is the round from the AK47S and is a standard 7.62

Here that A-10 shell is again note the Hunt for red october DVD Case is the smallest item there, followed by the AK47 magasine and then the round itself.
The pepsi bottle is only around 3 inches taller !
Is that the police knocking on your door?

@ Kaptain,
I take it that you have the relevent FAC ticket for the AK, or is it a replica?
The old bill generally takes a fairly dimm view of that kind of hardware...
There's even talk of requiring air rifles to have a license ...pft stupid country.

Look at the size of that thing!
Talk about poisoning the enviroment, you go duck hunting with that thing, hit an H5N1-carrying target, the duck explodes into a cloud of bloody vapour, the depleted Uranium mutates the virus and infects everything within a 50 yard radius, bird, man, plant, earth, anything.

The AK in the pictures is acctualy real, if i adapted it it can become live firing how ever British law prevents me from doing that.
My ticket aknowlages that this weapon is a deactivated fire arm which the inside is but the barrel of the weapon is not plugged so i can buy a re-activation kit and have that weapon firing again.
I bought the AK for conversion this is of around £25-£30 when i was in Macedonia, ive had it for a while now.
The reactivation kit costs around £120 roughly and i can buy that from the check rep. (easier said than done)
In all i have no plans to re activate the weapon, i have no need to seeing as ive got a very powerful and accurate air rifle that can do the job just as well.
Among other weapons i have also.
If you walked into a bank with that AK you may get a few looks. :-j

why? do you want to annoy the bullet as it passess through the vest, your body, a car behind you and several houses?
what size cannons were the harriers armed with? werent they DU as well?

Keep in mind that the shell is really more of a "sabot" for the DU core. It's an aluminium/steel outer shell, with some titanium/uranium for the core. The tip of the shell is actually very thin (not much metal between the tip and the core), so the core doesn't lose much kinetic velocity when it passes through.
The actual U-238 core is the size of a #2 pencil lead, about 3cm long.
JSLTIGER
04-06-06, 12:55 PM
It doesn't take all that big a core if you use something that's very dense (uranium being the densest natural element) and moving at extremely high velocities (you can pack a lot of powder into a 30mm shell).

We have a armor piercing round made of Depleted Uranium for our Bradleys that we use. The round will go through damn near anything practical. The great thing about the round coming from an A-10 is that gravity does alot of the work. It makes short work of any target that is sorry enough to be hit by it.

Spose it is a good way to get rid of unwanted uranium, that reminds me i wonder what they are doing with the old uranium from bradwell :hmm:
JSLTIGER
04-07-06, 08:57 AM
Keep in mind that this is not the same stuff used in nuclear reactors...that's the U-235 isotope which is fissile. The stuff used in these shells is U-238, which other than its being dense is not fissile, and therefore, not particularly useful.

When I was down at the RTU in Tucson, one of the IP's compared the sound with a giant zipper (to show a certain part of your *cough*...anatomy). Interestingly enough, I got to fire one of these down at Nellis a couple of times, before going to my assignment in Spangdahlem (home of the 52nd FW). I got assigned to the A-10 for 3.5 years. Served the rest of my USAF time in a command post stateside.
