SHIII on an Intel MAC running Windows!?!?!

Ok if you are one of those people that is going to try windows on their intel Mac & play SHIII, please post your results here. I have had this game in an unopened box now for MONTHS... but my attempt at getting a PC ended in failure...(and alot of hassle)

So I am being lazy & hoping that I get a chance to play on my MacBook Pro.

One of my friends attempted to do so, but with no results, the game played so poorly he eventually gave up and bought a PC.

As of today, Intel based Macs can now dual boot in either Mac OS & Windows!

Dutch, Was this today? if not, I'm guessing your friend was using softwindows or something??? Seriously, now that I can run Windows XP on my Macbook, I will try the game out... but if someone here beats me to it PLEASE post your findings!

This topic is of great interest to me. I am a cross-platform computer consultant and a rabid sub-simmer. My dream machine is a MacBook Pro dual booting both OSes and my favorite game is SHIII. Let us know how it goes.

This software that makes it possible to run both is called bootcamp. :hmm: It will be part of the next OS X release, 10.5 (called Leopard).
You can also download a beta version from apple. Gotta love Steve Jobs.

Yeah, there's a lot of that sentiment on both sides. I never understood platform chauvinism myself; both kinds of machines are adept at doing different things. IBM clones, for instance, are better at playing SHIII and catching viruses. ;)

I have supported both for a number of years now. I own several of each. My two main machines are a PC I built myself on a Soyo P4 motherboard and an iBook G4 laptop. I can tell you from experience that PCs require a lot more care and attention to keep safe and running well. They also suffer from a disadvantaged operating system; Windows has to work with millions of different kinds of hardware components made by thousands of manufacturers. The OS is therefore less tightly integrated with the hardware. That means more things can go wrong in normal use. The Mac OS, by contrast, is made by one company to work with its own hardware. Integration is tighter so the machines tend to run more reliably and hold their age longer.

IBM clones have their virtues; they're inexpensive (nearly disposable, in fact) and they are still the ubiquitous gaming platform. There are also still a very small (far fewer than most people think) number of applications that aren't Mac-friendly.

Having used both for years and seen their strengths and flaws, I believe an Intel Mac running both operating systems would be a near-perfect machine.

I hope to post some results on just this question soon. My MacBook is on the way. I currently use a PM G5 dualie for work, but also have a big Dell XPS tower loaded that plays SHIII beautifully. That's about the only reason I've kept this huge windtunnel around :rotfl:

To be honest though, with Intel GMA950 chip they're using, I don't expect good results. It's a great media playback chip (specific DVD features), but not a good gaming chip. We'll probably have to wait for the next incarnation of the PowerMac (MAC Pro?) to have a good machine for that.

As far as Boot Camp, I've installed on it several Intel Macs for dual users at work, and it works great. Many users say it runs Windows better than a Windows box :up:

I have a macbook pro 2.16 core duo chip and SHIII runs fine. Actually one of the main reasons I got this computer was to run this game while I am on the road. I have only been playing for a for a few days, but I have had no problems. There are a few annoying features thought.

The macbook pro lacks pagedown and pageup keys for moving the external camera. I also noticed a drop in frame rates using the grey wolves mod near the ports due to all the traffic. I normally use a usb mouse which works much better then the trackpad.

Runs like a dream on my Intel based Mac Pro. This is in Boot Camp, mind you. I boot to windows to play PC games. Parallels is another program wherein you run windows inside the Mac OS (snickers) to run Windows progs. (A "virtual" PC) But to dedicate all system resources to SH3, you need to use boot camp, where you physycally boot up a "windows machine". The good news is, it's running on a Mac, not some broke-ass PC :D

BTW, I'm also running MS Flight sim X, Falcon 4, Faces of war, Mideval Total War II, you name it.

What started out as a temporary workaround (I am away from my wintel for the winter), is turning into a beautiful experience. Using Boot Camp I partitioned the internal hard drive on a Mac, installed XP SP3, installed drivers from the OSX disk, and installed SH3. The whole process took about an hour with 80% of that being the Windows install. Apple recommends backing up the system prior to partitioning; the time to do that is not included in the one hour.

Five days into it with one 25-day patrol under my belt, it works great. The only issue is with the intro movie looking funkie, and who needs it?

The iMac is a 20" with 3GB, 2.16ghz core duo, and ATI Radeon x1600. This was a stock iMac as of 2006 (except for the memory which was upgraded from 1GB).

I've been running SH3 on a MacBook Pro (via Boot Camp) for months with no problems. A Mac with Windows effectively is a PC. I've been a Mac-only guy ever since Apple made the switch to Intel.

One tip for a MacBook Pro: Update your graphics drivers over the ones that install with Boot Camp. For Nvidia drivers: www.laptopvideo2go.com (http://www.laptopvideo2go.com) (search the release notes for the various releases to find ones that match your card).

Runs great on my little 2gb Macbook. I also boot into XP, graphics/sound/everything is great. Just completed Academy missions now onto th real stuff..

I run from my Mac to a 24inch external monitor and use external keyboard & mouse. What's great is I can unplug and take my whole computer with me in a backpack for some simming on the go..

Also run SH4 and it's runs well too.
