Usually coke but too much is bad for you and your teeth so I prefer juice or plain old water (fizzy water ok too). Russian kvas is supposed to be great maybe you tried it Kapitan?

Far too sweet, all of that soft drink crap. And, of course, unhealthy to the max. Even when I was a small boy I did not like too much sweetness. Today, it is even less.

Brandy-filled bitter chocolade-pralines is something different, though... :smug:

Yes. Love the kosher kirsch-filled Swiss chocolate we get here.

No special preference in soft drinks. I prefer diet Sprite but I wouldn't bother voting for it.

Try the German "Asbach Uralt" pralines with thin "Zuckerkruste" and quality brandy inside. Or the original Niederegger (only this manufacturer) marcipane from Lubeck. Pretty much the only candies that I eat regularly.

 I knew of the Jewish ban for meat if the animal was not killed in some mysteriously correct way. That Jews are banned from alcohol, too, so far escaped my attention. I thought that was a Muslim thing only, so at least now I know where they copied that from. So I spare you the debate about that special german red wine I prefer, sweet and light like fresh grape juice, it is like summer on your tongue and runs down your throat like a warm breeze, and I really think that everyone who has not tasted it has lived his life in vain and must die in clear desperation

Or is it marcipane that is not kosher?

joea
04-04-06, 10:07 AM
Wine and stuff is ok she aaid kirsch filled choccie. Kosher is not just meat, but for example meat and dairy must never be mixed even use different utensils, matzo must be baked very quickly before it can have a chance to rise etc. Avon Lady can tell us more on that.

 I knew of the Jewish ban for meat if the animal was not killed in some mysteriously correct way. That Jews are banned from alcohol, too, so far escaped my attention.
It also escaped from your attention that my 1st post here described how I enjoy kirsch-filled chocolate.
I thought that was a Muslim thing only, so at least now I know where they copied that from.
Nope! :nope: There is no Jewish prohibition against drinking alchohol per se.
So I spare you the debate about that special german red wine I prefer, sweet and light like fresh grape juice, it is like summer on your tongue and runs down your throat like a warm breeze, and I really think that everyone who has not tasted it has lived his life in vain and must die in clear desperation
Now wines and all grape derived liquids do have to be kosher.

The Rabbis several 1000 years ago prohibited (even to derive benefit from) the wine of a Jew if it was touched and moved (or even if it may have been touched) by a non-Jew. The decree with out of concern that the non-Jew may have poured some of the wine as an offering to his diety and Jewish law prohibit Jews from benefitting in any way from materials used or dedicated to idol worship.

While this decree is not in synch with today's circumstances most of the time, it cannot be rescinded for other complex legal reasons.

So unfortunately, we cannot indeed enjoy the good wines you speak of.

However, the kosher wine market has mushroomed over the past 30 years and there is no lack of kosher Israeli, French, Spanish, Italian, US and Chilean wines, including numerous international prize winners.
Or is it marcipane that is not kosher?
I assume you mean marzipan.

The biggest but not the only problem with chocolate is the emulsifier. While synthetic/chemical emulsifiers are used today (most US produced Hershey and many Nestle chocolate products, as an example), high quality and gourmet chocolate is still often produced using animal enzyme based emulsifiers, which are not kosher unless derived from animals that were slaughtered and processed afterwards according to Jewish dietary laws.

That would be specifically for kosher for passover matza. During the rest of the year, no one could care less.

Yes thanks for the reminder. Kinda dry they are though I actually like em (the local supermarkets have stocked up on products for passover) though they break easily (I've tried ones made in Isreal). Gefilte fish is tasty too, though a LOT cheaper in New York.

Of all soft drinks, I prefer Kvas. :yep:

This: http://www.russianfoods.com/showroom/product01422/vendor003E7/default.asp

All my Russian friends rave about it, supposed to be full of vitamin b and stuff too.

Kvas is one of favorite refreshing Russian beverages. In all probability, the Slavs knew about Kvas long before the foundation of the Kiev Rus.
The word Kvas is Russian by origin and means “ sour beverage”. It was so popular that in the “Encyclopedia of food” it was written: After water, the most widespread beverage was Kvas … we even think that people drink it more often than water…” At the same time the love to kvas overstepped the limits of classes: the poor people drank it with a great pleasure and the nobility preferred kvas to foreign wines.

Kvas was very cheap and this, partly, explains its popularity, therefore it served as stock for many daily dishes: turya, balanda, okroshka…

Excellent gustatory qualities of kvassurprised foreign tourists. They couldn’t believe that this delicious beverage, considered much better than sherbet was given to servants as well.

Together with sauerkraut, kvas was the only medicine that saved people from scurvy during a long winter without green, as real Russian kvas was made from malt that is notable for rich content of vitamins B. In folk medicine kvas was used for curing cold, dropsy, fever, intestines diseases. In Russian hospitals kvas was a necessary daily beverage for every patient. To increase nutritious value of kvas, it was made from two kinds of malt and without sugar; sometimes people added some honey to “ennoble” the beverage.

Usually people drank fleshly made kvas, but some lazy women managed to make kvas once a year and as required they poured in new water. At the end this beverage had nothing common with true kvas and was like vinegar.

There are many recipes of kvas, but, in general, they have the same ingredients, just in different proportions: malt, rye or wheat flour, boiling water. This dense mass was blended until it had a sweet taste. Then this mass was put in a well-heated oven for 24 hours. After that the mass was dissolved in water and left in a room for 2-3 hours, then bottled. That is the base of kvas making, but kvases differ by different types of flour, temperature of water; some people liked to add sugar, raisins, honey, mint or molasses.

Kvas making demanded much experience, skills and special equipment – large double bottomed pans.

Unfortunately, rich collection of kvas recipes is almost completely lost. But thanks to new technologies, now we have a chance to taste this delicious beverage – there is a real possibility to make kvas at home. You can buy kvas and enjoy this wonderful ancient beverage!

Along with 99% of the known world, including myself. My solution (b/c I've given up on trying to control my consumption): Diet versions. Yeah, I'll probably get some nasty cancer down the line, but if it didn't come from that I'd get it from something else.
