Problem with targeting ships

So, I've been having this problem when I can see a ship in the periscope at long range.
The problem is that when i "aim" for it I cant lock on it. I can see it clearly but it wont be recognized as if it wasnt there.

I'm running the unpatched version of SH3 and no mods installed.

Is there any way to fix this?

Might just be too far away. best results are from within 1000m.

Any reason why you are not patched to 1.4b?

I'm assuming you are using auto targeting.

At long range or shorter ranges during bad weather, you will only have lock for a few seconds (10 or less) until you get close enough for your watch to spot the ship. Fix.... no .....part of the game, just need to close the distance is all.

Also upgrade to 1.4b you can find the upgrade at the SH3 website.
