Procedure, walk thru desired. The hard question is,how do you point renamed game in programs/UBI to it's own SH3 file in my documents, with out them reading and over writeing each other? So that you could play each install separately.

1. Install SH3 once
2. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to SH3 installation
3. Copy and paste SH3 installation (will take a few minutes)
4. Repeat step 3 as required

You'll end up with folders titled:

\SilentHunterIII
\Copy of SilentHunterIII
\Copy (2) of SilentHunterIII
\Copy (3) of SilentHunterIII

5. Create your own shortcuts to each installation (or, if you use SH3Cmdr, create shortcuts to SH3Cmdr.exe and append the /l switch to set a specific installation - see the help file for more details).

Thank you,JScones, for your timely responce.Having read help,FAQ.& en.txt files,I've found two refferences for the (I switch)
you speak of.

reff.: can be forced to use any Silent Hunter III installation through inclusion of /l switch;
For example, you can create shortcuts to SH3 Commander for each of your Silent Hunter III installations and append /l:"<alternate Silent Hunter III path in quotes>" to the shortcut target. Should SH3 Commander still not find a valid installation of Silent Hunter III, you will be prompted for it.

reff.#2: Modders can now use a /nolaunch switch to stop SH3 loading (ie for mod testing purposes)

Questions #1:where are these switches,in your program?help

#2:Is this statement a valid concern:The hard question is,how do you point renamed game in programs/UBI to it's own SH3 file in my documents, with out them reading and over writeing each other? So that you could play each install separately?-----if this explaination is confusing,Silent Hunter III creates SH3 folder, in my documents,is it necessary,ie adviseable to have seperate SH3 folder, for each game installation copy,& how to point to same?

Your first advise:Create your own shortcuts to each installation (or, if you use SH3Cmdr, create shortcuts to SH3Cmdr.exe and
append the /l switch to set a specific installation - see the help file for more details).----Read until blue, missed it.---more explaination please.

IT"S hard to believe, no one knows of these issues

Q#1:
The SH3Cmdr Help file does not detail the process of creating desktop shortcuts as this knowledge is assumed (creating shortcuts is a fundamental part of Windows usage and is adequately covered in Windows Help - it is not unique to SH3Cmdr). The SH3Cmdr Help file simply outlines the format of the switch.

However, to explain...

Right click somewhere on your desktop and select "New" then "Shortcut". Follow the Wizard then by browsing to your SH3Cmdr.exe file and selecting it. Now, before pressing "Next" you will need to add the /l switch. So, at the end of the text now in the Location box, add a space and then

/l:"C:\Program Files\UbiSoft\SilentHunterIII [Whatever you've called it]"

including the quotes.

Now press next, then enter a shortcut name that reflects the SH3 installation you added as the /l switch.

Repeat the above for each installation.

Q#2:
Don't quite understand what you're saying here. Basically, you can have 100 installations of SH3 and they will *all* write to C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\My Documents\SH3\data\cfg\Careers\. That's the way the game is programmed.

But I don't see why this is something to get all hung up about (a few people have lately).

1. All careers are saved to their own exclusive folder, so all you need to do is remember what careers you play with what installations. No problem.

2. You *may* have an issue if you play different installations with different TC settings. This is really only a concern if you *need* the 3DRender TC to equal 1024x in installation #1 and the 3DRender TC to equal 32x in installation #2 (ie, to match a set fatigue model). But just change the value either manually or via SH3Cmdr prior to loading the game. No problem.

3. Similar to #2 if you play each at a different realism percent.

Yes, perhaps an annoyance if you have different realism or TC settings, but still very minor and quick to fix. The only other alternative is to continually adjust your "My Documents" location, but I will not outline how to do that here as I think it is really way overkill. But anyone who understands how to repoint special folders will know what needs to be done.

Thank you very very much,I understand now that my expectation of accessing the (l switch),was to press a button.(wrong)It is automaticly asking to have path programed,to read to. I will give it a try. Thanks again.I won't forget the quotes either .

It's also possible to use the....uh....Starforce Fix, and just make as many copies of the game folder that you want. Rename them to anything you'd like. You don't have to append command-line options, deal with the registry, or edit configuration files. Just double click on whatever game you want to play and you're off.

There's another, more practical upside to using the fix. If you crash your computer, you won't have to re-install SH3 (if you install games to a seperate partition, like I do) and all of the mods. Just get your video card drivers loaded and play the game.

tycho, what you´ve described also works without the "...uh....Starforce Fix".

And umm yeah, you've also totally missed the question. We've already covered the "how do I get multiple installations" aspect earlier on in the topic.

Yeah, but my solution only takes a single step. Two if you count holding down the control key while you're making copies of the folder.
