View Full Version : Mountings on the Sail
Could any one point me in the right direction to an explanation of what is mounted on the leading edge and the trailing edge of the sail/fin of a modern ssn?

Could you provide a picture as to what exactly you are referring to? The leading edge of the sail holds the hi-freq sonar for mine detection. As for the trailing edge, the only thing that I can think of is the exhaust for the diesels.
A trafalgar has various lumps and bumps on the leading and trailing edge of the sail plus the occasional large one on the side.I can email you a few pics if it helps

Some are for sonar and some for other sensors.

That was my educated guess as well...
:D
Can anybody recommend any sites for submarine technology?i was thinking of ones that give background on non-US technology!

www.fas.org or simply google
Kapitain,I have tried both but they are very poor on RN systems

This will give a lot of answers. Not direct mind you but use your brain and you can work it out.
Xabbarus,I was just about to send you this link.I believe we are talking about sonar system 2112.I saw somewhere that the original installation was not a success due to damage which is why they tried again.Do you have a list of all the RN sets and what each does?I have a list from an old copy of Janes but it is not up to date.I find it hard to believe that with the first Astute just about a whole object;but not fitted out;that trials are only just taking place on the kit to go in it!

This is a good site for you to search various systems.
sonar 732 it is a bit short on UK systems.I wish there was a UK version of FAS- that really is a brilliant site!
Xabbarus what is the difference between 2112 and 2115 apart from platform its fitted to?

One is the updated and mor modern sonar fit than other, hence why the submarines have gone through "trafalgar updates".
If you look carefully at t-boats since they first appeared there have been about three different configurations on the sail/fin.I would just like a definitive list/explanation of which one is which!

That is something i dont think you will get for at least another 30 years.
I would imagine it is classified.
As Kapitain says, most of the kit you see mounted on the fin of an RN SSN is classified, and most of it is fitted for trial purposes, so there's no definitive fit of it.
