My friend sent me loads of uboat photos. Most of them are new to me.

Here´s some of them:

A class III U-boat, propably pictured in 1917. The 105mm gun can be seen on the fore deck as well as the extended net cutter.

U117 was large, ocean-going submarine designed to attack shipping in American home waters during the closing stages of World War I. Whenever required, such ships would surface and take on Allied shipping with their guns. U-117´s armament consisted of 105mm (fore deck) and a 88mm (rear deck).

The Deutschland, an ocean-going submarine, was designed in 1917 to operate in American home waters.

A U-boat tackles rough water off the Heligoland cliffs. Even though the ships is a UB-III type, the picture has often been purported to show a World War 2 submarine.

Awesome!

Lovely seeing the WWI U-boats side-by-side with their WWII counterparts - since it shows how similar they in fact were. Very much a direct line of descent.

Oh, and I have a thing for that ugly bastard UA, I don't know why

Great pictures! :D

Though, are you sure of the date of this picture? :know:
There is a nazi Kriegsmarine flag in the right side of the pic, and the nazis didn't get to the power before january 1933!
I presume it's 1940!

Didn't mean to critizise...

Yes, it was a typo. It supposed to be 1940. :)

@Kpt. Lehmann:

I decided to stop posting the pics, as it seems that all the photos that my friend sent me were from that book. :(

But sure, I can continue if you want... or just download the book!

I found this on a website. It said it was U-99 (Kretschmer). Can anyone tell me please if that's true? Is it Kretschmer?

If it´s U-99, then what are those numbers on the conning tower?

And what about that emblem on the fore conning tower? I though that Kretschmer´s boat used the horseshoe emblem. :hmm:

Another pic of the U-99, showing nothing on the fore conning tower.

Hi Khayman.

I wouldn't be so sure that the photo shows U99. I think he was sunk in mid-1941. And at that time u-boats surely didn't have the extended flak platforms yet.

One would have to check when U123 was sunk, because I spotted that number on the conning tower. And there is a symbol as well.

The next one posting will have the solution probably.

Cheers

Kai

I knew I was right to be suspicious, thanks :)

I got it from a google search for "U-99" and it came up with this site http://www.titanic-whitestarships.com/WSL-Uboat.htm. It's about three quarters down (the google image is larger than the one on the page).

Perhaps he didn't always use the horseshoe? As for the numbers, they confuse me. Surely U-boats didn't have their numbers painted so large on their conning towers? I don't think they did.

Cheers for an authentic pic of U-99 though :)

And another tiny detail, where's the deckgun? Did he ever get rid of it before he was sunk?

Although I've always been interested in history and have some knowledge of the WWII era due to browsing many of my brother's books on the subject, SH3 has really whetted my appetite on the U-baot war. Can't get enough of this stuff now.

Very mesmerizing material; almost haunting in a way.

Thanks for posting these pics. Fascinating!

Cheers!
