if I could,,
Im running a U-Boat, not a day-care

if you dont take care of your crew, then your crew wont take care of you, just watch all those red exclaimation points next to them.
remember, as a commander, especially in real life, you eat last man,
sometimes there might not be enough food for you, so you will go hungry, and not your men.
this is how it is: your priorities are as commander;
1. MISSION
2. MEN

In reality, the Senior Enlisted sets the watch bill for port and starboard for all enlisted crewmembers while a Senior Watch Officer sets a rotation for all Officers of the Deck.
It would have been nice to have a watch bill feature built in the stock SH3. Having one would have allowed you to create "Port" and "Starboard" watch section watch bill and have a two Petty Officers of the Watch rotate the crew automatically.
Something to consider for SHIV, maybe?
I hope SHIV has all sorts of macros built into it actually, for crew management in beyond (e.g. hydrophone checks, battery recharges, etc.). There's many areas where SHIII could benefit from automatic routines set up by the captain, but that don't require his input every time. That'd be the best system!

I agree with AO1, I wouldn't take out the the whole thing out, but how letting me set up a auto-crew rotation? Like three shifts or "watches", doing like 4 hours on, 8 hours off or something, or the port-starboard watch like he mentioned. Make it my choice, so I have to do some management, but not a tedious amount, with different choices having pros and cons.

And allow for General Quarters also........

Heard some nasty rumours that SHIV have been cancelled by UbiSoft due to lack of interrest :o ????
:hulk:
Hope it was just a bad dream :-? .

The whole three shift idea wouldn't really work. That's more of a civilian concept than a military one. In real life the crew works 12 hour shifts, with the exception of anyone who works in the Reactor (nuclear) Department who works 6 on and 6 off 24 hours a day 7 days a week (even in port).
Now, I don't know how they did it in the Kreigsmarine, but I bet it was similar.
And allow for General Quarters also........
This wouldn't be realistic if I assume what you mean. If GQ was sounded, it doesn’t matter if you only had 45 minutes of sleep... it's Battle Stations time!
In 1998 I was working the night shift and was an hour and a half into my sleep when the General Quarters alarm sounded... then I was up an additional 16 hours while we evaded an Iranian Kilo Class submarine. Then by the time we secured from GQ, I had to work my normal night shift. Ahh... military service, how I miss it so.

Be nice if someone could make a mod for like in Das Boot if you crack up you get a P-38 in front of your head.(Walther p-38 that is )
Well you don't need a mod, just be a good Skipper, sink lots, get your crew home safely and give them medals. Soon many of them will be immune from fatigue. Haven't been playing the game long but my officers seem to have gotten a lot stronger since they've earned the Cross in Gold.
I think I heard somewhere the shifts for U-boats were 8 hrs. officially on duty, another 8 maintenance and of course 8 more in a nice, stinky bunk.
Well come to think of it a Johanne mod may be cool. Like if the character went crazy during a dc attack and tried to get out of the sub. I don't know about shooting the guy, but maybe have a brig compartment where he has to peel potatoes for while to recover his morale. :-j

For "game playing" purposes this is true. But highly unrealistic for those who looks for immersion and realism in this game (myself included).
How many Petty Officers were awarded the Knights Cross during WWII, let alone the basic seaman? Most of us look at this game as a simulation (after installing mods), and some look at it as just a regular game.
Awarding the entire crew the Knights Cross is not a viable option to hardcore sub-simmers to cure the "fatigue" problem..

As crew management adds another dimension to the game, and since the captain is responsible for both boat and crew, I also think it needs to be modified to make it less tedious and more realistic; but not eliminated completely.
I think part of the weakness of it is also due to its very basic (and seemingly not fully implemented) crew stats, as compared to other games that use similar but more fully developed systems (like the Jagged Alliance series or the X-Com series). In Jagged Alliance the team members were taken to a rather high level due to the designers building personas, complete with some voice acting, into the characters; while in X-Com the personas were a bit more shallow but both used dynamic stats such that the team members would improve in different areas over time. Different games than SH3 yes, but SH3 attempts to accomplish something similar through its basic stats, medals, and promotions features that it fails to pull off. Hopefully in SH4 they'll come up with a better system.
