When SHIII assigns you a patrol grid in career - do you have to go to that grid, or can you just free-sail and sink whatever enemy ships there are? Does it have any impact on your renown?

When SHIII assigns you a patrol grid in career - do you have to go to that grid, or can you just free-sail and sink whatever enemy ships there are? Does it have any impact on your renown?

It gives you 500 pts (I think) for reaching patrol, gives you another 200 pts for completing, and another 100 pts for returning to homebase.

Those renown points are needed do the grid patrols ;)
