If there could be specific missions in campaigns...What types of missions would you like to see?

I picked 'cloak and dagger', but any of the options would be a welcome change.

All of the above.
Insertion missions would be fun. Infiltrating the dangerously well patrolled British coast without being detected and of course passing up juicy cargo targets.

I vote for "Patrol grid 'xx'"!

A couple cloak and dagger missions might be interesting and make for some variety.
Probably the best campaign engine I've ever played was the one in Falcon 3.0/4 .. granted a lot of its strength lay in its dynamic campaign, which is not really compatible with historic type campaigns, but it was also really good because of the variety of missions: CAP, ground attack against specific targets, search and destroy, close air support, etc.
Even though "patrol grid x" is in the spirit of the Battle of the Atlantic, it still makes for a somewhat monotonous SH3 campaign (don't get me wrong, its still good, but it could definitely be better).

Well, I meant the patrol grids as a joke (DRY humor doesn't work well with a navy crowd!). I didn't realize until just now that it was actually an option in the poll! HELL YA!-I want something different than the boring old patrol grids! Cloak and Dagger or Rescue would both be a very cool addition!

Cloak and Dagger.
Like nosing your boat into a beach at the US to drop off agents. Or being ordered to rescue POW's who have daring escape attempts involving escaping from camps, stealing boats and meeting you on some deserted shore (but in the game they succeed!).
All of the above though really. While "Patrol that grid" is fun enough, it would be good to have some variety.

There are several I would like to see. Could be something to put into SH4 as well.
I do miss the down pilot option in SH1 that was fun. :yep:
Cloak and dagger that's what we did in WW2.

I second Torplexed. All of the above and weather reporting. I simply would not buy a subsim that isn't at least 50% boredom! :rotfl:

Yup. Same here.

I chose cloak and dagger as it would be fun. Something like delivering secret materials to the Japanese. Of course all the choices look good to me.
Im going with All-above also,
but if I have to chose just 1,
ill take cloak and dager.

Air/Sea Rescue of Downed Airmen or Sailors
A good deed ;)
Surely! I'd like to have all of the above.
But it would be perfect if they were made available not only as single missions but in Campaigns as random events.
Also another idea; Just they would be radioed in during your simple Patrol mission. An urgent message follows;
"BdU to U47,
Air reconaisance have reported that a Major Carrier have been severely damaged and docked at Scapa Flow for repairs.
Also our agents have informed an enemy Task force have been redirected to Scapa flow for escort purposes. It is estimated that they will be arriving in 18 hours 45 minutes.
You have 18 hours to Finish her off.
Out."

I didn't vote, because my preferred option was unavailable: all of the above!
Having the historical facts impact on your missions would be enjoyable as well I think. For instance, during the Norway campaign in 1940, missions would more and more include safeguarding German capital ships, patrolling fjord entrances against English destroyers, or being sent to intercept English capital ships.
During the Battle of Britain, missions would include ordinary tonnage war, but also raiding British ports, rescueing downed German airmen and escorting German ships (usually these "escort" missions consisted of laying in a predetermined position since a sub's speed couldn't match surface ships' speed).
Missions would also depend on your boat and home port. For instance, if you were based in Bergen, you'd be given convoy intercept, capital ship intercept and support German capital ships/destroyers type missions. On the contrary, type IX boats from the Bay of Biscay would do all sorts of long range work: drop spies off in USA/South America/Africa, deliver and collect supplies or top secret materials to and from Japan (think of rocket scientists, radar sets, jet fighters). Of course, all of these are in addition to and not instead of the usual tonnage war.
Weather reporting or shadowing a convoy are useful missions, but only if the next version of the game allows for wolfpacks - otherwise shadowing has no use whatsoever.
To increase immersion, the interaction with BdU should be stepped up considerably. "Be more aggressive" and "Keep up the good work" do not cut it in my opinion. I wish that contacting BdU while at sea could result in new orders. When my IXC is just about out of torpedoes somewhere in the Caribbean, but still has truckloads of fuel, I would like BdU to despatch new orders like "Pick up agent in Newfoundland" or "Monitor harbour X" after I send my patrol report. Weather reporting, shadowing, picking up downed airmen are all missions perfect for boats that have expended most of their ammunition and wouldn't be able to add much to the tonnage war anyway.
Think about it.
Kind regards,

Or meet U B and transfer 20cbm fuel to it.

I agree with your whole post; I just wanted to say that rescuing downed airmen is a fun thing, but during the Battle of Britain? In the Channel? Way to dangerous for my blood; leave it for those crazy kids in the Schnellboots.

And right you are Sailor Steve, the channel was too dangerous for U-boats. Not all Luftwaffe missions were launched from France though. A Luftflotte based in Norway also weighed in with several raids, including a few fairly sized ones. I seem to recall them operating as a major decoy on Eagle's Day or something - the Germans hoped the British would shift air units to the north allowing the France-based Luftflotte to have an easier go. The British didn't play along.
Rescue missions could work in the areas northeast of England, where S-Boote didn't roam.
But these kind of missions could also be encountered in the Mediterranean, around the German efforts to numb Malta.
Kind regards,
Eichenlaub
Superb summary eichenlaub. That is the way it should be!
I dont understand it shouldnt be that hard to put such features in SH3? and i hope they include these things in SH4.
i dont remember which post i mentioned about that but I still insist <Panzer General> style rewarding! (It was the primary factor running the passion of the player to do better). Remember, in PG, according to your success
Prototype vehicles/vessels,
Experimental equipment/weapons,
Special missions
Should be awarded to the player who is found very successful in their missions.
Also i am strongly supporting the idea "extra missions" or "minigames" introduced during patrol missions.
