Finished patrol #4. U-14 IIA, Flotilla Weddigen, Nov.1939: Five torpedoes, Five misses  :nope:

Used the G7e for the first time.....missed both times...was historical and used the "faulty" magnetic pistol. Oh well....

The usually reliable G7a also let me down this patrol: Fired a doubleshot at a C2, at 2000m... a pretty easy shot, both missed....was totally amazed. :o

Now I know the frustration the U-boat men went through early in the war.... :damn:

I have SHIII commander. Went to the Nightclub after to drown my sorrows...the first thing said: "Bloody faulty torpedo detenators" :o  :yep: :hmm:

Gotta love the realism though....

i know wutcha mean dude. I found the juciest convoy. lined up perfectly. Fired a full salvo of torps. i think i got 2 duds, 1 miss. 1 ship sunk... and after that i retry. another full salvo. 2 hits, no sinking, and 2 more duds. amazing.. 1940.. I was dissapointed.fter about 2 hours of fighting this convoy. I managed to sink 1 ship.. damage 1 other that never fell out of formation..argg..

The worst thing is let’s say you fire a couple of torps and they hit but no detonation result a couple of dents and scratch the paint work of your target ship. :damn:

Plus a loud "CLANG!" as they bounce off the ship

My favorite was firing two G7e Type II torpedoes apiece at two Revenge Class BBs. All four pre-detonated because of the magnetic pistol settings.

I have used nothing but the impact pistol ever since, and I've received a lot more success since I switched tactics.

Unless the sea is dead calm I use nothing but contact pistols, set to run a shallow 1-3 meters depending on wind speed and draught.

So far in this campaign (on my second patrol in my little IIA in Oct '39) of 8 torpedoes fired, all with contact pistols set (and all using manual targetting, no WO assistance, and dud torpedoes on), I've scored 7 hits out of 8 shots fired with no duds.

The only downside is it can take an extra torp or two against bigger targets, but better that then watching them go off prematurely or sail harmlessly under the keel :)

Shooting from 2000m isn't promising, even if the eels are perfectly functional. I suggest you get within 500-800m, set for Mag 1m under the keel or 3-4m below the water line, and fire with the target at 60-70 deg. AOB.

Good hunting!

While attacking a convoy at night last mission, I had a fat T3 tanker lined up nicely and fired a 3 torp salvo. All 3 torps detonated prematurely just after being fired (or at least I think that's what happened, all I heard was one loud boom and when I pressed F6 I found no torpedoes visible). I think my torpedoes were on magnetic so premature det is the likely cause, then again I thought at the time the 3 torpedoes may have collided with each other. How likely is this latter possiblity? Has anyone had torpedoes collide? This would make salvoes risky...

I don't believe collisions are possible since salvo shots don't launch simultaniously but rather a couple of seconds apart - and all fish are running at the same speed. So even if they do cross paths at some point they will not be occupying the same piece of ocean.

Chances of the torps colliding with each other and detonating? I'd say right about zero.

What were the weather/sea conditions like when you fired them?

Even if they did cross paths then I can't imagine the force would be enough to activate their contact pistols. As you say, they'd be moving at the same speed, so any sideways impact between them would be mild and would probably just result in both going off course.

As far as I'm aware, nothing like this ever happend in either war.

Sorry I changed it while you were typing that. I decided it was too obvious.

I response to your reply, I can only quote the Blind Man from Circle Of Iron: "One is taught in accordance to one's fitness to learn".
