On the surface getting reports from radio man that radar signals are being detected. What exactly does that mean. Aircraft, warships, merchants...?

Means your boat is being "painted" by the radar of a radar equipped warship or aircraft.

Yep its get out of there time,
Swith off gramaphone, tell the men to be shut up and bury your sub under the waves.
Either that or be a complete rambo and man your guns waiting

Agreed, Get a radar signal don't assume its only from a aircraft, could be a destoryer that would like nothing better than to blow you out of the water :o

When an enemy with a radar set approaches you, the following should happen - in theory.
First:
The transmissions from his Radar are just strong enough to reach you, and your Radar man may be able to detect them and give you a warning.
Second:
As the enemy gets closer, his radar transmissions are now strong enough to hit your hull, bounce off, & the reflected signal return to his Radar set. Then he detects you.
However, things are rarely that simple.

does your gramaphone playing give you away?

I've read that in the game it doesn't, but it certainly could in real life, and it's also very annoying when you're trying to concentrate.

when i spot a merchant, a convoy or a warship i dive to scope depth and as a reflex i turn off the gramophone just to avoid distracting the crew and makeing sounds that the asdic could pick up. when im hunting/being hunted the atmosphere in the room changes... it gets silent, just like in a sub.
im thinking to get some red paper to put in the lamps just to get a sub-like atmosphere when atacking =P
i just try to act like if i where there. :arrgh!:

Ahh. The you-are-there atmosphere. Gives one a handy excuse to neither bathe or shave. ;)

Heh I've been having similar thoughts... though what I'm contemplating is a small red light (like a reading light) just to illuminate the keyboard. I like to game in a darkened room anyway but I find any glare from lamps really interferes with night shooting (or more specifically, ID'ing the ship before firing), while if I turn off the lamps I'm handicapped by not being able to find the needed hotkeys on the keyboard (and turning a lamp on and off over and over is annoying).
Any added immersion as a side effect would be a bonus :)

i find it really hard to identify the ship with the lights on too :yep:

That's a question I've been wondering about for a while.
Is the sound generated by the gramophone modelled in the game world, or is it just something for the player to hear while playing the game. (back ground music, that isn't 'heard' in the game)

I read somewhere in the run up to the game that it would be picked up.but ive played it at loud volumes regularly and they dont seem to pick you up any quicker. The community manual is blank on the matter as well.

Thanx, you all are a wealth of knowledge. By the way i have decoys installed but what is the damn button to deploy? Can't find it in the instructions.

I'm new to the "radar era". Any tips on how to proceed?
Started a carrer in 1944 and I'm feeling out of my element here :(
Specificaly, I am now in position to intercept a large convoy, only to discover that I can't get within a 20 km radius or else their radar paints me. Submerged I can barely keep up with them at flank speed, clearly no oportunity for maneuvering and positioning... what to do?

Radar = homing beacon.
A U-boat that uses radar is no different than a solider wearing a yellow neon uniform on the battlefield. The only scenario that the radar might be useful is if you're in heavy fog... but then again, you're still broadcasting your presence.
If you want to survive the Battle of the Atlantic late in the war, use your renown to buy the radar detection equipment instead. This way you're practicing EMCON (Emissions Control) and you will passively detect threats before they detect you.

So fumb and radar are seperate? For later in the war say 43, do most of you run without the radar on? And what about sonar. It says its an active system, would you recommend not even installing it.

Regarding the gramaphone, I read a third party manual that said it is picked up, but instead of being detected from it, the enemy would think it was radio waves and it would then in fact help disguise you! But that doesn't appear to be the case. Too bad, it would add an interesting dimension to game play. You could then play recorded whale calls, fooling the destroyers into thinking you're a bio, like on "Down Periscope", or have the crew sing "Louie, Louie" and they would think you're just some drunk fishing boat. Hmm, how about someone make that a mod! I would take full credit of course. Not that anyone would want credit for this idea anyway.

I prefer "A Fistful Of Dollars Overture" by Ennio Morricone when I'm heading for the attack - the crew like to whistle along. Then when we sink a ship we change to "The Good The Bad And The Ugly", complete with the first watch officer on trumpet.
