Not been following this one too closely, but from what I heard saddam is arguing that under Iraqi law (when in power) he was within his rights to do some things as their law permitted- I guess this starts to come into the 'soverign nation' thing... my country, my law; not yours?
Whatever, I can see this one as being a long and protracted business, given the preliminary hearings so far and the problems encountered.

I fail to see why they give him the chance to even defend himself, if it was the other way round saddam would of had the person shot straight away without a trial. I remeber reading an autobiography on Saddam there was one incident where some of his long time opponents some of them cousins had a disagreement, so he invited them to a meeting and dinner then had them marched outside and shot on the spot. Problem solved :o

2. Because to do it would lower us to his level and therefore legitimise his actions.
