View Full Version : Destroyers are too easy!

I am encountering the problem that it is almost impossible to be killed by destroyers in SHIII. All i need to do is submerge. In 1942 I can run at 60 meters at flank speed with the phonograph blaring. When a depth charge run is accurate i am damaged but don't die. When I don't go to these ridiculous lengths to try to be hit I am not hit at all. I am running with all realism options except external camera and have Real Uboat mod. Is there anything I can do to make my opponents better? It isn't fun to be able to survive so easily. Thanks.

I have the same "problem" ... i'm still in july 1940 but it's very easy to escape from a DD , submerge to 120m , silent runnig , wait ... it seem they trow out of the ship deep charges random .
I hope that from '41 ahead they will increase their skill or we could re-write history .........

oh ,i'm using rub,100% realism.

Yes. Wait until 1944. You will have no problem dying time and time again.

British ASDC systems in 1940 were quite capable of hounding you into your watery grave once you were caught in their sonar net. If their weapons missed you, they would sit on you until you ran out of air. They always knew where you were from their sonar readings.

"There he is Captain." "Keep watching him until he gives up." "Aye Aye Captain."

I was suprised too when in the single missions, and your thrown into a situation you would never enter yourself like firing on a hunter pack in the middle of the day that I got away by diving deep, and running silently.

But later in the war in a later single mission the same tactics got me sunk.

So maybe Ubisoft made it a gameplay issue. There were alot of complaints in SH2 that it was too difficult. Apparently novice players didnt realize going into the sim that uboat crews did not survive the war if they followed kreigsmarine orders, and engaged anybody at anytime.

So maybe Ubisoft made it a gameplay issue with increasing difficulty until realism certain death statistics engaged, giving new players the chance to win a few rounds before being defeated, and thereby selling more units.

There was the same complaint in Flanker 2.0. Novice flyers couldnt understand how a high tech expensive missile usually hit them.

The trick is to not get fired upon, and stay away from the sonar net.

THEN AGAIN, you didnt mention sea conditions. ASDC, hydrphone, and sonar are sensitive to sea conditions. Rough seas shut down its capabilities which appears to be properly modeled here. Thats all that could be happening here.

I agree, that the DDs are too easy!

On my current WaW patrol I slipped inside a convoy, sank couple of ships and the only warship whom started to search me was the Southampton Light Cruiser after I torpedoed it. Oh and it´s taking place in 1944.

You still didnt mention sea conditions, and getting inside a convoy is a good tactic. Hydrophone-Sonar operators have stated a convoy is a cacophany (if spelled right) of sound in which a sub can shrewdly hide.

In other words sensors dont work there either.

Though being a jerk, you are to be commended on discoverying this tactic.

Heres your medal, and your 3 day pass is cancelled.

Yeah... wait until 1944. Very fast DD with nice antisub weapon. ;-)

On current patrol the weather was bad, but this is my third patrol in a row where I could sneak in to the middle of the convoy, sunk ships and sneak away. DDs just sail there as if there´s nothing happening around them.

:hmm: Umm... whatever you say.

Well... they`re easy in 1939, 1940...so easy that You can even consider them as targets. But in `943, `944 it`s changing. In 1944 I encountered few destroyers and believe me, it was deadly.

Don`t forget that amount od destroyers and weather count as well.

The problem is, they were not a push over in 1939, Jürgen Oesten relates of the quality of the enemy escort crew's of 1939. He mentions about a destoryer that gave his Type II a real going over for a period of 12+ hours.

Of course, there would have been poor 'new' crews.

Well, on one hand you have relations about tough destroyers even in 1939 - on the other hand, however, therre are relations about totally green crews. For example notice some actions of Kretschmer`s U 23, back in 1939.

I have not enough expierience in playing whole campaign throughout the war with one mod installed ( for example complete check using TOnnage Mod ), but I suppose the rule should be as follows:
green crews in early war, with some - RARE - exceptions; in 1941-2 there are just few, very few green crews, some tough and most somewhere in middle. And for the late war... killers.

Yup its so easy once your in the middle of a convoy, the escorts get confused. If you stick with the convoy, keep close to a ships propeller you can reload internal torps no need to move out of sight to reload. Only problem i have with 1943 onwards is those blardy aircraft attacks! They never stop.
