I've been wondering about this issue for awhile. The GPS satellites are hardened, but there's a bunch of commsats that are lightly. It's only a matter of time before we get a really wicked solar storm that starts knocking things out (or out of orbit :o ).
All the more reason we should be deploying blimps for comms.
The Auroras would be pretty...and let's face it...there wouldn't be much in the way of light pollution to obscure the view ;)
