Well, I've reached my breaking point with this game. I've had nothing but constant problems with it since I got it. And I just reinstalled the game because I was having problems, and now every time it gets about 95% though the loading process, it crashes. I have to look around a see if there any other decent sub sim games out there.

Nothing has changed in the machine. This crashing is just a new thing that started. All my machine specs are well above the recommended game specs.

This is unbelievable. I just reinstalled yet again and i'm having the same problem. I'm giving up on this now. This is the absolute worst PC game I ever spent money on. I've never had one problem with any PC game I ever bought. I've had nothing but problem after problem with this one. I can safely say I will not be purchasing SH4.

Thanks to all who helped me with my questions in the past.

I downloaded and purchased it. How do I find out if there is any Silent Hunter entries? Or do I just do a scan and it should take care of everything for me?

Treken -

i havent yet insalled the game (should receive it in the next couple
of business days), but think this is the best sub sim since "Aces of the Deep" which I think is the measure mark....

Give the game a chance... the folks on this forum can help you get it running... give them the opportunity, and you will not regrett it.

I dont mean the worst as in its a bad game, I just mean its very buggy. It almost feels unfinished to me. Its definitely not as refined as other PC games out there. They dont even let you swich the screen resolution which has been a standard feature for many years now.

Ive had it for 2 or 3 months now, and there is just a lot of issues im having with it. I cant get the game to run at 1280X1024 with the patch. I went though all the steps for XP SP2 and it just doesnt work. My anti-aliasing doesnt work right anymore. It used to look fine, and just stopped working right. Normally I change it in my card settings, but now when I do this, everything gets really blurry. And nothing has changed. This just happened on its own. So I have to stick with everything having jagged edges which looks horrible. My sun only glows on a rare occation. Usually its just an ugly white disc in the sky. I played with trying different drivers, turning on and off AA and it just works when it feels like it.

Thats just barely scratching the surface of the issues ive had. And now all of a sudden the game wont even start up. Its the most frustrating experience ive ever had with a game.

Treken - I feel for you... many cutting edge games cause system issues.... and No, I can't yet help you with this one as I have not yet installed it.

BUT... Since this game is many times ahead of it's peers (and I did research the topic), you should spend the effort to make it work. I have several games that work well off of initiall install, but none for me will make me happy as much as a good sub sim..... post your issues on this forum, and I am certain you will have your issues resolved... just make sure you include details. System config (monitor, video adapter, memory, and drivers) are usually the cause of issues.

AMD Athlon 2ghz
2 gigs RAM
nVidia 6800 with 512 video memory

The specs are fine and the game has been running fine for 2 months. I was having some issues in the game, so I decided to do a reinstall, and now when I get about 95% through the loading, it crashes.

Anyone else have any suggestions of what I can try? I tried what donut said by cleaning my registry and that didn't help.

Noone knows anything else for me to try? If I can't get this figured out, there is a good chance I will never be able to play this game again until I get a new computer, which is not happening anytime soon.

Just a quick rundown of what happened. I was having some fairly minor issues in the game and decided to reinstall. I did that, and nows when the game gets about 95% through the initial loading process, it crashes every time. I tried reinstalling 3 times and get the same result. Tried cleaning out the registry before each install too.

Traken - Can you post the details for when then system crashed on a "clean" install when you are strarting up, as well as the actual system details from DxDiag, and your system config? There are a number of folks here that can maybe help you, but more details are needed.

Check through the sticky thread on tech and troubleshooting problems. You are certainly not the first with this problem, but within that thread it seems to me that just about every problem has been covered.

About the first week or so I started playing the game, before I came across the Subsim forum or anything, I had the same problem one time when I booted up the game by mistake, didn't want to wait for the full bootup to quit the game again, so I manually terminated it with the Task Manager halfway through the loading process. From that point on, it would quit on me about 90% of the way into the boot process. I did a clean reinstall, then uninstalled and then updated my graphics driver and soundcard drivers (all of this with virus protection turned off by the way) before it would work again. Not sure how or why it was this way. Wish I could tell you more than that, I'm no computer whiz. There are some real tech geniuses when it comes to computer problems at this forum and have seen them work miracles for other people's problems, hopefully they'll see your post and come to the rescue! Just be patient, sometimes it takes several days before they notice your post. One way to speed up the process is research the forum for other people's posts on tech problems and graphical issues, see who helped them, and then "PM" that person/those people your question directly. That's helped me a couple of times get more timely feedback on urgent issues.

And I share your sentiments about the lack of polish or finish to the game, I thought the same thing when I first started playing it, also felt the same thing with SH2 and thought, "Here we go again!" (I mean, its been 4+ official patches, and they still haven't gotten it right!) Thankfully, a combination of a couple of mods solve all that! Thanks again mod community!

1/ I remember there was a recent thread on 6600 or 6800 cards and the issue was resolved (search 6600 / 6800 resolved / solved and you'll find it ; make sure you check to search both words). It's pretty complicated though.

2/ Although a lot of people have tuned up their SH3 resolution, I wouldn't push a game that was not initially designed for that. At least I wouldn't expect to run flawessly.

3/ These are the finest graphics I've ever seen on a subsim. No offence for Dangerous Waters, but it looks like SH2. Nice gameplay though, and a lot of options. Imagine like you had an SH3 and be able to command XXIII, U-cruisers, XIV, milk-cows, mine-layers, V&Ws, Swordfish, Liberators and harbour AAs.

4/ If you ininstalled then re-installed and you still having problems, it's something that it remains in either your registry or /windows / system /whatever folder apart from /program files / ubi etc.. Remember what you installed in the past and get rid of it.

5/Be patient. This is a virtue of a real Kaleun

I will say that Windows is usually the source of these kinds of problems. Its a bad platform for games and is unstable in general. If it was working fine and then suddenly stopped operating properly then its usually to do with something buried inside windows that was somehow changed. If you are determined to play this game you could try and reformat your computer and reinstall windows. But to begin with cleaning out your registry and overall optimizing your system is advisable. If you do reformat the whole thing and the problem persists then you can know it was not related to your system while if it works fine thenyou'll know something went awry in the works.

I figured out what was wrong. The game is a download purchase. When I 1st installed it, it somehow installed the 1.4 patch for me. This time it didn't do it for some unknown reason. and the game would not run without the latest patch.

I'm glad to hear there may be a chance yet to resolve your problems. I've been happily playing it for almost a year now, and while I have had a few complaints-both technical and historical-I'm still playing every day with few problems.

Best of luck.
