I want to sink the Mayflower!!

Any way the Mayflower could be modded into the game for a time traveling expedition? I want to pretend that my U-boat just went through that green portal thingy that was seen in the 1978 movie 'Final Countdown' with Martin Sheen. If I am a Nazi German U-boat then I figure I should sink the Mayflower while I have a chance! :rock:

Is it possible to add sailing ships to the game? I wonder if their sails could flutter in the wind simlar in par to the national flags represented in the game. Were there not personal sailboats during WWII? I don't think they would have fiberglassed hulls in WWII but most likely wooden hulls with a layer of primer, paint, and antifoulant paint on the underbelly! Would be cool to see sailing mast on the horizon from my periscope. Perhaps a Schooner, Sloop, and Yawl could be modded, no?

I seen the movie but you can't change history even in the "Final Countdown" they returned back to normal time before they could sink the IJN Carrier fleet.
But just as a matter of intrest what was the Mayflower?

Mayflower was the boat that brought the pilgims (puritans) to America to found the Plymouth Colony which eventually became the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Sailboats and the Mayflower in SH3. NICE! I agree, sailboats would be an interesting addon for both SH4 and SH4. I've looked at sailboats on www.yachtworld.com and there used to be a wooden sailboat from Germany that was used by the Kriegsmarine to haul torpodes. I thought that was kinda cool. Also the US Coast Guard Barque Eagle is a sailing ship (made of steel) that was built by Blohm & Voss ship and was used as a training ship for German Naval cadets.
It was dredited with shooting down 2 aircraft in WWII. Interestingly enough, a pic of the Bargue is on the bulkhead in a few of the scenes in Das Boot. The captain also mentions sailing in huge sailboats as big as cathedrals in Das Boot. I'll bet he was referring to Horst Wessel
later recommissioned as USCG Barque Eagle. :D Anyway, I agree, sailboats would a very nice addition to either SH3 or Sh4.

Prewar germany had a huge number of sailing vessels.
In fact most sailing vessels worldwide were german before the war, like Eagle or Kruzenstern.
The Kriegsmarine had Gorch Fock, Horst Wessel and Albert Leo Schlageter.
Wessel is USCG Eagle, Schlageter is the portuguese Sargres II, Gorch Fock (I) came back to Germany in 2003 (after being soviet/ukrainian since 1945 as "Tovarich") and is currently a museum ship, but might become a civilian sailing vessel in the future.
Interestingly, all captain of Gorch Fock became merchant raider captains in the war, Rogge taking over Schiff 16 Atlantis and Kähler Schiff 10 Thor.
Germany also has a Gorch Fock (II) build 1958, which is the current sail training vessel of the Navy (I did two cruises on her), which makes things kind of confusing since there are now two Gorch Focks.
But before the war, the sail training vessels mostly did their cruises in the Baltic or in the North sea, not as wide ranging as the Gorch Fock does today (a regular cruise is to the Azores or Canaries via Britain, but there have been cruises to the US or the med or even around the world).
Lehmann-Willenbrock was more likely to have been on Großherzogin Elisabeth or Padua (Kruzenstern) as he came from the merchant marine as part of the Niobe disaster replacement crew.

Anyway, oceangoing sailing cargo vessels were not longer common by 1939. There were some sailing vessels sunk by U-Boats, but most of them were small schooners in the caribbean.
Most square riggers in the 1930s were actually finnish owned and used for some kind of ripoff scheme:
Many merchant mariners still had to make a cruise on a sailing ship for their qualification, and a finnish shipowner called Magnusson offered this service by buying old square riggers and using them on the grain run to Australia. With no fuel costs, no wages except for the small standing company (the cadets actually had to pay for their voyage!) and no repair costs (the ships were simply used up until they sank or stranded), it must have been quite profitable.

I am not sure that the wood hull would produce the jaring impact needed to set off the pistol, and, certainly, magnetic pistols would be out of the question. I suppose if you set the depth to zero and spread a shot fore and aft of the main mast, you could make some big enough holes to cause the Mayflower to roll over. I don't think you'll get to see her go boom.

Anyway, do you have some sort of problem with religious reformers? The USA will be founded without the settlement at Plymouth. Besides, you're 13 years too late. The colony at Jamestown was established in 1607.

In real life I have no problems with religious reformers or the Allies. I am an American after all! However, in this 'simulated' world I am a Nazi U-boat Captain and fighting for my country. I pretend that I don't know the outcome of the war and BdU keeps telling me while I'm out to sea the Allies will fall. Therefore, I look at the Mayflower, if I should be able to time travel, as a 'Troop Ship' and it must be destroyed at all costs! :arrgh!:


I think setting the torp to impact 1 meter depth will blow the living hell out of that ship. Splinters shall rain from the heavens for weeks to come!!! :arrgh!:

Odd to think that as a 20th century submarine captain without a deck gun you'd be pretty helpless against a square-rigged schooner. Guess you could always ram like the ancients did.

Makes me curious about the old Kirk Douglas movie The Final Countdown where the modern carrier Nimitz is about to be pitted against Japan's Kido Butai. Wouldn't heat-seeking missles be fairly useless against prop-driven planes? Luckily Tomcats still carried guns.

Thanks for the info. Actually, now that I think about it the A-6 Intruders would probably come in so fast with their payloads that they wouldn't even need CAP. The poor Japanese wouldnt even know what hit 'em since they didn't have any sort of radar. Just scout planes. :cool:

It would be a good tactic for Germany to go back into time to sink the Mayflower and others, to sort of destroy America before it ever got started. But the Borg tried this against Earth in the movie: "Star Trek: First Contact" and failed, and they were the Borg for crying out loud! What chance would the Germans have!
