Have any of you guys played this mission? It is impossible!! :damn: :damn:

Every time, I play it, the escorts wipe me out... once I snuck away from they were about 2km away, and had a shot at the Guadalcanal, just as I was getting ready to take the fan shot, an escort ramms me.... :nope: then I het hedgehogged to death.....and all this without the soundguy giving me any warning..!!!  always ends the same, with me dying....no matter what I do... :o

Any body ever crack this "Kobarashi Maru"??? .... for those of you who know Star Trek II..... :know:

I've hit the carrier with 2 torpedos, that's my best result so far.

What realism setting? How did you get away from the escorts?

Just watched via camera. Escorts seem to know EXACTLY where you are. They always go right over my positon. :o

I am not sure u-boat performance is modelled correctly. At flank, the IXC can't turn at all.... :nope:

It was a well known fact that submerged boats can always turn inside escorts.....perhaps its not modelled properly.

Forgot to say, I died shortly afterwards. The carrier didn't look like it intended to sink. Can't recall realism, wouldn't have been 100%. Looking at the description I think it's assumed you will die, practically impossible not to.

I have always heard that surfaced they could out turn a destroyer, but I have never heard that they could do that submerged. Everything I have read leads me to believe that, due to their slow speed, once submerged their only haven was to go as deep and silent as possible.

John, I read an actual account of RN escorts being able to make a run on a submerged U-boat, due to shifting heading...true, it was a flower corvette that was doing the chasing, and the boat was a type VIIC.

Also, I think the escorts are uber...I used the external camera, and always, they did runs right over my position....also, by checking with camera, I also see that they drop their cans at my depth.... even when I switch depth..how???..... :nope: :nope:

This is in Summer 1944. You don't have a chance.... :nope:

The book is Convoy, by Middlebrook, I think. :know:

I played it many times.
The best method is :
1- Stay in the same place you started the mission at ""Full Stop"". :yep:
2- Aim your torps and fire (a salvo, 0 degree spread), yes, from long long long distance.
3- Slowly get her deep, the deeper, the best. You do not want to attrack attention until your torpedoes explode.
4- Good luck.

I have done it numerous times. Actually, it is my favorite mission and I use it alot as a test bed for sub skins and such because of how bright it is under the water. When I do the mission I usually order silent running and ahead 1/3. The escorts are all moving quite fast so for the time being it is unlikely they will detect you. I usually set all my forward fish to magnetic (9m). Once set them, I usually get a solution each time I fire the torpedos. I have found in the past, that when firing salvos, there is too much "lag" between the first torpedo and the rest.

I think maybe the breifing where it says you are in a bad position minutes away from destruction might be a clue LOL .

I havent hit the carrier yet.....yesterday, I finally did not get killed, let the escorts pass this time instead of sticking my scope up :yep:

Fired a fanshot at the carrier which missed of course.....but at least did not get killed....

I just scored a 4 hit with my salvo - problem here is, that the carrier is speeding up on the begin. So if you stick with calculations from your WE, you miss guaranteed.

Here is how I did it:

1. Load the mission, set up your salvo/attack preferences - I suggest at least 2 eels, better make it all 4, spread 0-1 degree max - you have only one objective which counts, the carrier. Periscope up - turn to approx 270 degs, you will find your key objective there. Lock it.
Try to keep the periscope as close to waterline as you can, otherwise the near escort can spot it.

2. Let your WE calculate the distance, AoB and speed (or calculate it yourself, but I am not that good yet :hmmm:). Following step needs to be VERY fast if you use WE calculations, so prepare for it mentally :)

3. Unlock, move your crosshair on begin of the carrier (where the notepad data is still automatically updated), then quickly switch to CTD and unlock manual setup - increase speed dial to 8,5-9 knots. WE sets it on 7 and you miss with that speed guaranteed.

4. DONīT return to periscope, DONīT switch back the manual control! OPEN THE TUBES with Q! and about 2-3 secs later, fire away. Donīt worry that the timer for eel impact wonīt show, you will hit the carrier - 3 eels impact sink it for sure, the 4th one is just for show.

Now if you need to get away, following needs to be set up, but immediately after the release of eels - do not watch the eels impact in periscope, or you wonīt get away.

5. Periscope down. DONīT FORGET!
6. rig for silent running, hit "D" for Dive.
7. full rudder starboard/port - you choose the way out :salute:.
8. creep away at 1 knot set speed. The escorts donīt know you hit the carrier from about 3,5km far and are now making a run for it, and 1 knot is too slow for them to detect.
9. wait for the eel impact while already on your way somewhere safe :) By the time of carrier happily on itīs way to Davy Jones locker, you are 40m deep and scurrying the opposite direction of the escorts.

10. get very, very far, get on surface, enjoy the completion :)
