View Full Version : Watch officer mute after re-install?
This is a weird one. I've had to reinstall SH3 (Got a new MB & CPU). But since the reinstall, my watch officer is silent. He mouths the words when he sees a contact, he acknowledges my orders in total silence. I've only actually "heard" him once or twice since reinstalling last night. Every other time, his announcements are listed at the bottom of the screen, but I can't hear him.
Anybody have any ideas, please? This is driving me nuts....

Maybe it helps to disable the sound hardware acceleration. Start/Run/dxdiag, sound tab.

That's exactly what I did. I knocked the acceleration all the way off, and his voice suddenly came back. I tested the sound in dxdiag, at various stages of acceleration. And it crapped out for some of the tests, until I turned the slider all the way to the left.
What a bummer. The sound really leapt out at you with acceleration on. I'll have to content myself with the tasty graphics. I'm running at 1024x768, default, but changing the image setting to "quality" and the anisotropic filtering to 8x really improves the quality of the image. And with the 3700 Clawhammer cpu, it counteracts the additional slowing down incurred with the image settings.

I had the same problem. Here's what you do.
1. Uninstall the game.
2. Uninstall the sound card drivers (optional).
3. Reboot
4. Install the sound card drivers (optional)
5. Reboot (if you re-intalled your sound card drivers)
6. Defragment your hard drive
7. Run "Scan Disk"
8. Make sure that your anti-virus software is disabled (which I think was the culprit from my last install of SH3)
9. Re-insall your game.
10. Troubleshoot.
I had Norton's Anti-Virus still on and active when I re-installed SH3. I think that the sound files were corrupted when it happened. I turned off my Anti-Virus and re-installed... no problems since.
Qucik fix, but this may (or may not) apply to your situation.

the same thing has happened to me, and I hadn't changed a thing! now I don't get to hear ANY of my officers report to me
the really wierd thing is that this happened soon after reading the first post of this thread and thinking, "wow, that would suck!"
it's enough to make a guy superstitious...
do I really gotta do a clean install? :damn:

After messing about with some Das Boot soundpacks i had a similar problem with my crew.
Couldn't figure out what the problem was, how it was caused or how to fix it. But a clean install cured my problems and i did not create the problem again after i had installed those sounds.
That still beats me....

I actually tried this with an updated "beta" driver for Windows Vista. And I got further in the dxdiag tests - namely, the sound never crapped out, but it got garbled for the last few tests. I think it's a driver problem. Having scoped around on the web, it looks like there can be an issue on this motherboard with the realtek 850 chip. I'll have to ask on the dfi board, but it's offline this weekend.
Thanks guys!
