View Full Version : Most fruitful enemy ports?

I have the IUB mod installed and i also use SH3 Commander and before i start searching every port i wanted to ask what players experience have been in finding enemy ports with decent ships docked.

I checked up near Scapa Flow but all i found was a bunch of destroyers, nothing to rave about. I do have the list that tells you when and where capital ships are docked but i was more interested in finding harbors where convoys are preparing to leave.

Thanks for the help :arrgh!:

Thanks for the info i will check those out soon enough, i recently installed IUB and had to start a new campaign from scratch. I am getting a little tired of continually running into damn trawlers/fishing boat/tug boats which arent even worth me bothering to waste a shell on let alone an eel. It's nice to have a little list of the good hunting harbors.

I am only using IuB and SH3 Commander (which doesnt add ships) only. It seems that not every port will be populated with ships although i think you have a better chance to bag some at actual ports than psuedo ones. What i mean by that is zoom in on the port your thinking about entering, If you see a harbor area you will have a better chance of spotting ships than at the ones when you zoom in on would only have the red dot and not an actual "built-up" harbor.

I went to Hartlepool in 11-1939 as suggested and found and sunk 2 C2 Cargo ships a coastal merchant, 1 Flower Corvette and a V & W Destroyer. There was also a small coastal vessel which i let be and a 2nd Flower Corvette that was inside the netted area and was obstruced behind a light house so i was unable to nick it with a couple of torp. Even moving back to 3000M and surfacing to fire some shells from the deck gun failed to get a reaction other than it continuing to ping me.

Hope this helps, good hunting :arrgh!:

If your ever sent down to the Capetown South Africa area for a patrol, take a spin in the harbor, timeline for me was late 1942. Lightly defended and you should find a T2, a C2, and 1-2 other merchants. Went there 2 times and the ships were there. ;)

One of the patches, I think 1.4, put ships in (some) harbors. One of my favorites is Curacao. There are always ships there, and the harbor is 300m deep. It's a long ride to get there though.

Port Raiding is gamey
:D

Ok, there was Prien, but apart from that, the only port raids were in very remote places like St. Helena or some minor ports in the carribean, and even those were hair-raising adventures with little gain, as most ships could be salvaged easily.
One other occasion was U 995s raid on Kirkenes in 1945, which was simply an act of stupid overconfidence of a 21 year old Commander, who somehow managed not to get sunk by a soviet destroyer INSIDE the harbor (talk about soviet competence at ASW at this time).
But he didnt do any damage either, but at least we now have a museum submarine, but I think this was not a Knights Cross, but rather a mission worth getting relieved of command.

1939-1940 haven't tried it after. AM53 or one of the patrol grids around it. I don't have IUB or RUB installed. Seems everytime I go around AM53 I have a large convoy coming in from America. Last patrol in U-123 Type IXB I did a patrol over by AM53 and annihilated a convoy. Only one V&W destroyer guarding it. Some nice T3 Tankers and C3 Cargo ships. I decided to do something stupid and take the destroyer with the deck gun. Low and behold I plugged it about 10 times and it blew sky high. After that I submerged and started plugging the convoy with my torps.

By the end of the patrol I had totalled 107,000 tons. Now this totally blew my mind as my previous best was around 56,000 tons. This was also the first time though that I was pretty much unimpeded in engaging a convoy. I fed on them for about a day and a half until I ran out of torps. I have the game at 96% realism (NO DUD TORPS). The amount of tonnage was do to some extremely lucky shot placement. Lots of one shot kills. Of course I was plugging away on NEUTRAL AMERICAN ships in the convoy, but I explained to BDU that no one was flying flags and that they were maneuvering like they were BRITS.

SO all in all give AM53 a shot. best bet when you get a convoy report try to intercept it as far out as possible because if you engage in AM53 itself, it's not that hard for extra destroyers and planes to come to the convoy's aid.

Good hunting and there is my ten cents.

Stop port raping :x

I don't know, I always felt that port raping was not realistic. I never really bothered going on ports, there's always some DDs and when I see DDs... AALAAAAAAARMMM!!
