I am a U-boat fan so I enjoy SHIII very much, and most folks in that forum would state that Das Boot was the greastest U-boat film made in histoy. What if any are the best tank related films? I think I remember seeing a movie about a father who stole a US Army tank from a base and used it against a local police department that was corrupt or something, but I didn't care for it much. It seemed too fake and the stupid cops were shooting at the tank with pistols :nope: . Is there any movies that are about tanks or a tank crew that is based on a real life situation? Something like the 'Memphis Belle' movie that was about a B-17 flying fortress crew during WWII. It had some comical moments to it, but was based on a true story about the actual crew. Anyways, post what you know or post a link to such movies if there are any.
Well, subject to the fact that the real Memphis Belle's final mission was a milk run in which nothing happened (The AAF weren't about to risk their publicity boys on their 25th mission)...
Try 'The Beast.' Soviet tank crew in Afghanistan.
"Why can't we take the helicopter? Why do we have to go back through that in the tank?"
"Because you're tankers, damnit!"

SubSerpent the movie you are thinking of was called Tank. Starred James Garner as an Army officer with his vintage Sherman tank trying to free his son from a corrupt southern sheriff.
BTW I think there is already a thread on this subject on this very page.

the best ww2 tank movie? that would be "Cross of Iron", and no it isnt about tanks its about german infantry, but the combat sequences between men and real honest to god T-34's is stunning, including placing teller mines on the treads of passing T-34's, and wedging them between the hull and the turret are really the best stuff you will ever see i swear.
and the rest of the movie is pretty good too

War in the Sahara, Bogart-Style
Sahara (1943)
One of the best WWII-era WWII movies… war actioner starring Humphrey Bogart as a tough American sergeant commanding a tank crew in the Libyan desert.
Now thats tank'n folks.

Sahara is a classic. Aside from Spielberg's 1941 that's the only movie I can think of which starred the venerable M3 Lee medium tank.

The Showtime cable channel did an almost scene for scene remake of Sahara some years back, with Jim Belushi in the Bogart role. To my surprise, it too used an M3 Lee. I thought at the time they'd most likely use a Sherman.
Another movie with good tank action is Kelly's Heroes, with Clint Eastwood. Shermans vs. a railway depot, and Shermans vs. Tigers; but in a realistic way. It's one of my favorites.

Yes, Kelly's Heroes was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid; still is one of my favorites.
Come to think of it, Donald Sutherland as the tank commander would also have made a good U-boat Kapitan.
