Lately i,m loosing interest in sh-3 . Its way to easy . When i,m detected of when i pumped in some torps i go to 60 meters and go silent . I dont release any decoys and dont manuaver to evade the destoyers . All they do is drop a few depth charges and go on and look in the wrong direction . Its july 1944 . My viic is only upgraded with tower 3 and the second rubber skin to evade the pings . But all they ever do is loose me . When i have multple destoryers look for me they sometimes drop charges reasonably near me but i only get shaken up a little . I mean i,nm starting to loose my interest in sh-3 becuase of the lack of any real action besides the attack . I mean in real life 1944 it was damn hard to get rid of them ! I try to make is easy for them by not going to deep but even this does not give me any real action . I,ve allways been looking for the das boot experience in sh-3 . But since the day i,ve been playing it since it first came out it has become clear to me that sh3 really lacks in this perspective .

I use a modified version of Destroyer Aggression mod which I plan to release eventually.

Those guys are anything but passive for me :dead:

oh well i know what ur talking about. just had a ~4 month break from sh3, and the pooed dd´s where my nr1 letdown.

i got back now, and spend quite some time finding suitable mods for me. wasnt easy coz alot happened in the meantime.
just finished my first post break career, wnd well... some stuff has realy been improved, thanx to iub, hollywood, sh3 commander and nygm mod.

i do think that the dd´s are still not dangerous enough. i got through 8 patrols, from okt 1940 till jan 42, and i had only one real dd charge, where three destroyers had a go at me. that was pretty cool, since one of the blackswan, dunno why there are so many of them in it now, but hey, constantly reaquired me via ping. they unloaded around 70 charges at me, which gave some of my crewmen quite a chill. minor damge only tho.

i noticed that many dd´s doesnt seem to have any asdic equipment installed tho :/. is that some game balancing fix which came with iub/rub?

well i cant find the destoyer agression mode on uboot realsimulation . Can someon please tell me where to find it? I did a seach in the mod section an realsim . But it couldnt find it anywhere

you guys must be reeeeal good... the DDs dogged me to death a few times in my early days life as a uboat skipper...

actually, i quite enjoyed the chase :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Lose your rubber dress and no silent running...
One other way is to upgrade all Destroyers to elite and don't use rubber, It's much nicer without. he he

For me they are a real pain, If they once find me it's no peace intill I'm dead or have sink them. Btw I don't have the "Destroyer sonar fix"

Another reason why SH3 is easy is because the developers excluded a lot of vital ASW warfare tactics and technology that the Allied forces used in WWII.

1. SWAMP- It was a tactic that involved as many ASW platforms as possible to keep the U-boat from surfacing so they could recharge their batteries.

2. Sonobouys- Yes, they existed in the later years of WWII.

3. MAD- Or Magnetic Anomaly Detection.

4. MK 24 "Fido" Torpedo- The Allied answer to the Ge7E Type V and Type VI


Even if one of the before mentioned was incorporated in the game, it may have been a lot more challenging to the even the "Old Salts" of the SH3 sea.

Other ones aside, the FIDO seems to have been excluded from the game on purpose as a 'one shot kill' weapon. Personally, I'd have lived with it :hmm:

well im not getting warm at all with this.... :hmm:

im playing with rub/iub, hollywood and nygm mods. im currently in nov 42, and i cant say that the dd´s are dangerous for me at all. as soon as i leave the surface they are helpless. i noticed that most of them seem not to have a asdic installed at all (possible issue with one of the mods?). i can pass right infront of them, and they wont notice me. they have absolutely no abilitiy to reaquire my position, after their initial sighting, which is done by visiual most of the time. on convoy aproach, sometimes i can continue my attack run on periscope depth after i have been sighted, without the escorts having teh ability to detect me.
i tested the modified dd agr mod yesterday, but i couldnt realy notice any improvement :/

I have RUB and SHIII Commander installed, and I just recently had two DDs hound me for the better part of an hour. Luckily they weren't too accurate, and after a while they went away; but it's February 1940 and I would certainly describe them as aggressive.

I am testing a AI_sensor set right now.

While on patrol (VIIC, Oct, 40) I was sighted on a clear day at about 8600m by a C class destroyer. He raced like mad towards my position as I dove. I am at 100m and trying to stay in his rear but his turning is pretty decent so he keeps getting a general bead on my location. He has made 3 dc runs where he thinks I am .... so far this is a decent set up.

Like you, early war DD's were more of a let down. This file set is a marked improvement. Check out the Thermal Layers thread by Hemisent.

Should be something released within days.

(a lot of people have worked on this AI_sensor thing, CB, col7777, ducimus, jungman, redwine, sniper_1, timetraveller, CCIP, Catsaflung (think that is his nickname). They have *labored* on it and come up with some excellent alternatives.

Looks like the link got truncated. Im sure if you dig back far enough in the mod forum you'll find it. Pretty big thread, was up to 30 pages or so if i remember correctly.

At the moment, I'm testing destroyer aggression mod (with Rub), and I wonder, is it normal that hunt II made only one attack run at me when she detected me (after I sunked other escort at the same convoy)?

hmmmz im at the verge of shelving sh3 again. this totally blows for me.

next patrol, jan 43. i sunk my first none dd warship. a taskforce with 2 light cruisers crossed my path. got into position for a daylight submerged attack, despite a screen of 4 destroyers. double fan shot from 2k meters on a fiji. one of the escorts traveled right over me, without detection. i mean right over me. i was barely 30m deep. after the 2 eels hit, one of the escorts made his circle and actualy pinged me like 3 times. i simply dove to 80m and did a knuckle. dd lost contact asap, and did a dc pattern wide. he was of course not able to reaquire my pos. sped away after additional 2 circles. the other dd´s couldt be arsed anyway.

convoy aproach. again broaght daylight. one of the hx convoys. the leading dd sighted me, probably via radar. i simply dove to periscope depth and continued my aproach. impressive dc pattern, with the problem that i had already, evil me, changed my position. i let him doing his circles without bothering him. i had to do a med range shaot, coz the convoy started zig zaging away from me, but still managed to hit a c2. broke in half that poor beggar. no retaliation from the escorts... of course.

its the year 43, and the game offers no challange at all for me. all my convoy attacks are more or less like this. if any1 of you has managed to alter this kind of behaviour, to a more challanging/realistic turn out, pls help. im aware that in the recent month, this topic has already been discussed, but maybe some1 had come up with a new good solution in the meantime. pls help

I played with it and it did. Although my opinion is that, at least under RUb, it is a bit too tough sometimes.

As I mentioned, (with CB's permission, of course) I'll probably release my version of the mod (tested entirely under RUb-like settings) in the next little while. By tested, I mean I spent two months playing campaigns with it and making small tweaks.
