hydrophone and radar

I have searched the 'search' options within subsim forums. Can someone help me with this? Most of the boats have radar eqpt. but it doesn't seem to work? The switches move but nothing seems to happen. Also, on the XXI there is a sonar 'pinger' control. When I use it, it gives a range that is very,,, not right. Even after 'pinging' the contact several times for accuracy.
I suppose I am screwing something up. But I cannot figure it out.

My guess for the radar is that it wasn´t meant to be manned manually.

What comes to 'pinging', it most likely depends on how 'good' your sonarman is. Give him some medals and try again. Also, if you click on the sonarman, you can order him to ping for a accurate range or approx. range.

The radar does work if you have it installed on your ship, but your not likely to see anything beyond 32000m at best (and it takes big targets for the radar to pick them up at that range ive found). Small targets often wont even show up on radar till they are well with in visual range. About the only thing the radar is good for is picking up aircraft a little earlier. Ive used it manualy but its tricky as the wheel is too sensitive allowing you to easily skip over a contact.

As for sonar ive never used it, sonar pretty much gives your position away at ranges twice that you can detect with. When i played with it though it seemed to be accurate.
