A sight that would make Count von Zeppelin proud. I'd prefer an 18 hour trip to the east coast in a really cool looking floating hotel over a standard flight any day. It'd also be amazing to see the sky filled with these:

The first prototype is scheduled to be completed in 2010. I'd be curious to know if they are still vulnerable to the same fate that befell the US Navy's zeppelin fleet in the 1920s and 30s. Destruction in high wind and storms.

Am I the only one who thought this thread would be about a Led Zeppelin reunion?

It wasn't high wind and storm that destroyed the Hindenburg, but because of a fire - probably caused by the Hindenburg being highly charged with static electricity when its mooring line touched the ground - and the resulting explosion of the highly inflammable hydrogen gas.
Nowadays the much safer helium gas is used.

I guess I was thinking more in terms of the doomed American zeppelin fleet which consisted of one former German zeppelin and three American built ones and all used the safe helium gas. The Shenandoah, Macon, and Akron were all lost due to bad weather in the 1920s and 30s. The Los Angeles survived but she had her hair raising moments too. Here is a picture of her performing an 85 degree nose stand at her mooring mast in 1927 during a heavy windgust. The crew certainly had a memorable ride that day!

After losing three airships the United States Navy decided zepps weren't worth it and eventually scrapped the Los Angeles. The spectacular loss of the Hidenburg certainly seemed to seal the zeppelins fate as an aviation dead end....maybe. ;)

Actually, from looking at it I prefer that thing under water rather than in the skies. It would be a nice sub… the first commercial passenger/cargo sub.

At great speeds, it should reach Liverpool - New York in less than 72hours with over 3000 passengers in the quietest environment; all seated aircraft style and the Cargo would be immense.

Now that would be using the room in good advantage. Up in the air, it needs most of the space for keeping that stupid gas mass to make it buoyant, and only a small portion is left for the people and cargo, not very efficient.:nope:

In addition, if that thing crashes and there are survivors, it would be somewhat funny to rescue people talking like little babies because of the helium gasped a few moments ago…:rotfl: :hmm:

And yes Led Zepp rocks…

Led Zep reunion. I guess you'd be needing a clarevoyant too?

What do you need to reunite Led Zeppelin?

Three more beers!

Okay, three hundred is a bit more realistic...

Does anyone recall the photo of the USS Los Angeles (ZR-3) standing end over end (approx. 85 degrees from horizontal)? I don't think passengers would approve.

EDIT: The photo:

Of course I recall the photo. I already posted it in this thread. Also posted my concerns about wind. People must be glance reading again. ;)

Oh and just for good measure.....Zepp rulz!

@ Torplexed:
I owe you an apology, when I reacted to your earlier posting I had not properly read your text. You were indeed talking about the US Zeppelin fleet and not about the Hindenburg.
My excuse is that I am so used looking at your postings more than reading them...
(isn't that a slick lawyer's remark?) :rotfl:

No need to apologize Abraham or JSL. :D I've been guilty of the same thing myself on many an occasion.

You're right...I probably should have used some sort of eye-arresting imagery to start the post off. Can't imagine what. ;)

And if it gets windy when its half way across the atlantic?
Does it drop anchor?!

I wonder if they will ever invent a hellicopter so big that it will need a anchor for storms :hmm:

And if it gets windy when its half way across the atlantic?
Does it drop anchor?! :doh:To be more accurate, in the olden days they had to try to predict the weather for pretty much all the crossing. Often the trips had to be delayed for days, weeks. And that despite having nice weather at the docking area. And when a storm lied ahead and they were already en route, they use to avoid the storm just like today, if they could that is… :know:

Well....submarines and zeppelins too. That and all the WW2 trivia oughta do it. :D

Yeah an older drawing. Not very good.

I do enjoy drawing ships and planes but in this era of 3-D artwork there isn't much call for the old 2-D stuff. Doesn't have much personality either.
