Greyrider did a lot of work with the hydrophone sounds in the game. I believe the max distance he came up with was 34km. Very, very hard to detect but thats when the hydrophone begins to pick it up. Does not mean that the SO will get it only if you are manning ther station. SO's are pretty much half worthless as modelled.

Yup your Hydrophone operator will pick up contacts at around 10-15km depending on his experience so take my word for it and listen manually most of the time. Whenever I submerge to listen for contacts, I ALWAYS man the hydrophone myself. You will pick out a contact much further out than your operator, as Hemisent mentioned right up to 34km. :ping:

I find the only real use for my own hydrophone operator is to get him to keep a close watch on the lead escort as I make my approach. If the enemy changes course or speed all of a sudden, it's a sure sign that he's sniffing around for trouble so the sooner I know about it the better!! :ping: :arrgh!: :ping:

I submerge about every hour for a check around. I go to P depth usually, but lower if the weather is bad. Then I stop engines and man the hydrophone myself.

Not having the engine running gives you a chance to listen behind the boat.

If I get a contact, I turn towards it and carry on. A strong contact would mean a periscope check. After 10-15 minutes I stop and listen again. This tells me if the target has moved left, right, or not at all. His general direction is then known.

Now I surface and head in the possible direction for contact at full speed. If nothing is seen in 15-20 minutes, I dive and start again.
