View Full Version : Optics on Periscopes reversed?

Am I wrong. I thought the Attack Periscope was 1X. The scale currently on the Observation Perscope is much more useful for determining range.

Are the optics reversed?
Could the views be switched?

I think it's right. The attack 'scope gives a clearer picture. I would assume that the scale on the attack scope is also 1.5, so you don't have to do any converting.

Attack scope is 1.5x and 6x; Obs scope is 1x and 4x. In theory, the obs scope tilts higher (so you can scan for aircraft before you surface - this seems to be modeled in the game) and also lets in more light so sometimes it's better to use at night/dusk/dawn (not sure if this is modeled in game - I can't really see any difference myself).

The attack scope is smaller and therefore creates less of a visible wake on the surface (obviously important to help avoid being spotted during attack approaches) - not sure if this effect is modeled in game or not. The scopes on the Type VIIs and IXs that I've tried so far all seemed to be set up correctly from this perspective - can't remember if the Type II has both (been a while since I've used one of those).

Good luck and good hunting!

The size is modeled into it, as far as the other points I'm not sure.

The 'Sky' scope in the game does indeed crank almost straight up. It doesn't let in more light and it doesn't have a wider field of view, and it should do both.

As for the wake being spotted, I've no idea.

The Obs. scope is wider view so that you can also scan the horizon faster looking for targets, so says the manual, then swith to attack scope when going in for the kill, since its smaller. It has less view but you already found what you're looking for.

Really? I've never noticed the wider view. I'll look for it next time, and if it's there I'll cheer. Loudly.

I've never actually looked closely or measured to see whether it is actually a wider view or if they just simulated that by making it spin faster, but you can scan the horizon much faster with the obs scope than with the attack one

Yep - ran some tests while out on patrol tonight - was kinda rough cause I wasn't near port or anything to use as a good landmark, but basically it appears that the attack scope is approximately 40 degrees across, while the obs scope is about 60 degrees across (both at minimum magnification levels) - that would seem to make sense given that the obs scope is 1x and the attack scope is 1.5x, so it looks like they modeled this one about right :)

That's good to hear. I like the fact that they modelled it at all, and that it cranks up higher. Just to make myself use the Obs scope more I won't use the Attack scope unless I first climb up into the conning tower to get to it.

Thanks for your work in finding this out.
