I currently have a
Pentium 2.4
Radeon x800 pro graphics card.
Would i be better off getting a new mother board and a
AMD ATHLON 64 4000+ 939 or a
AMD Athlon64 x2 3800+ 2.0Ghz 640k Cache Socket 939
Thankyou in advance.

The 4000+ in 90mn package. The X2 is great for multitasking, no benefit for gamers. stuff will not load faster - just run a bit brisker when u multitask on the X2. See 4000's review here:

couple with a Gig of cas2 ddr2 ram and you are smoking. The bottle neck of the system will be the grafix card at that point.

For SH3 a dual-processor wont give any performance boost, and a Athlon 64 4000+ (Sandiego Core) with 2.4Ghz clock speed would be better then the Athlon 64 X2 3800+ with 2.0Ghz clock speed.

However, future titles will more and more take advantage of dual core processors and it may not be a bad idea to invest in a dual-core now. I personally decided to go for Athlon 64 3700+ (Sandiego Core) as i mostly play games and in a couple of years when the dual cores start being properly utilized in games, I'll buy a dual core processor which will be a better then the ones available now.

In any case, SH3 is not as much CPU reliant as it is GPU hungry and extra RAM (1gig or more) is very useful in curtailing load times etc. in SH3.

SH3 will run much better on the 4000 than the dual core. Only games that use both cores would be better and there are none (yet).
Also agree when there are then it would make more sense to upgrade at that time because you can be sure they will be different and the 3800 would have to be replaced anyway.
The 4000 can be OCed (with better cooling) to near FX-57 specs for a third of the price.
This has been asked many times on hardware sites and is universally noted.
