Well I'm new here(just picked up the game a month ago) and I've never played a sim before that time. It was only until I read Gamespy's ten best games of 2005 that I took notice of this gem, let's just say I haven't been playing DoD:S with my friends as much since then  Anyway after booting it up and struggling through Wazoo's guide of manual targeting(even printed out and made that cool bearing tool) I sunk all the ships in the torpedo training academy! Never has a game been so hair-pullingly difficult, but ultimately satisfying as this. Stumbling onto subsim.com I found probably the best community of gamers anywhere which helped this first-person shooter's transition into subsim gaming. Now I'm actually itching to get my hands on SHIV as much as I am Unreal Tournament 2007.

Anyway, now that introduction is finsished, down to business...It's 1944, December 31, 22:21 local time and a type XXI, u-boat 3501 has just encountered her first battleship!

It's my 45th patrol and I had upgraded everything on my XXI and the renown I've accumulated has been mainly spent on Type XI torpedoes for those over-zealous escorts. Departing from Bergen, I later finished my patrol in grid BE33, but not before sinking a Bogue Escort and his foolhardy escort. Finishing my patrol I head north-west, around Ireland to the ripe convoy hunting grounds off her northern coast, this patrol is over when I say it's over! My men are treated to an early Christmas present when another Bogue Escort and her three escorts, cross my hydrophone path. Ahead flank, 13m due to rough weather and up snorkel, I steam down an intercept path. About 30 minutes later, it seems her rear escort has broken off to investigate...A TXI set to 5m ends his pursuit, detonating to his rear but strangely not doing any damage to his screws or rudder, showing no physical signs of damage, he retreats back to the convoy seemingly unharmed. At 25m, Ahead Flank, I'm closing distance to the carrier, manual targeting out of the question due to terrible weather, this will have to be close and personal...I set a salvo of tubes I and IV, 9.5m(bad weather), 1 degree spread, constantly updating course to be 5 degrees ahead of the carrier, I'm now at a depth of 14m to maintain visual contact. 700m, 600m, 500m...good enough...Los! I immediateley order All Stop, depth 25m, soon after this I get a Unit Detroyed message, curious...too soon for the torpedos to have hit...it's the destroyer(talk about a slow death)! Then as an added bonus I hear the detonation of my other torpedo, another Unit Destroyed! Just after one torpedo on a Bogue! Suffice it to say the 2nd fish hit as well and she sank deadfast.

The escort directly in front of the carrier continued on seemingly unaware of her primary's demise. The escort on her left flank however came over to investigate. I'm at All Stop, 25m now and coasting at 5Kts(love the XXI) tubes I and IV aren't being loaded so all is quiet. The escort fires hedgehogs and DCs at the spot where I went All Stop and is obviously content with that spot as he doesn't ping me once :D Sometime later, he departs and I continue on, patrolling grids AM 52 and 54.

Some days later I also sunk a troop transport in a convoy but stopped there(wasting torps on C2 Carriers and T2 Tankers isn't renown worthy) going All Stop after firing, 25m and letting the convoy pass over me. After reading the rundown of renown for each ship, it's only worth while to sink the troop transports and T3 Tankers of a convoy to get the most out of a patrol, renown wise.

Which brings me to the point of this post, I've just encountered a King George V. After 44 patrols and thinking I'd never see one before the end of the war(it's New Year's Eve 1944) I've finally got one in my sights! About every five patrols I snuck into Scapa Flow but never saw anything other than a Fiji. I had given up patrolling off of northern Ireland, it had gotten pretty slow, I had decided to head down to the southern waters off of Ireland for the other sweet spot for convoy's while en route, I'm in grid AM 54 moving south-west, I pick up a hydrophone contact and scope it out with free look, I'm using 92% realism, Ta-Da! King George V and two troop transports in one convoy...wish me luck!

92% realism, only using free look(maybe not on my 2nd career)

Tell me when you first encountered your first BB, Illustrious, how many torpedos it took, where they hit, the aftermath, etc.

I first saw the Revenge in Scapa Flow with my IIA. I used a salvo of three torpedoes with very small spread (<0,5 deg), around the "ammo" sweet spot.

I was far away ~2000 if i remember right, so I didn't have any problems with DDs. I sneaked out without anyone noticing me and
after ~100 kms I sank a C2 with my last and lucky torpedo

I've been playing SH3 since it came out and I only just found my first BB a few days ago.
There were 2 Revenge class BBs with 5 escorts. I fired all 4 bow tubes seperatley at the second Revenge and started to sneak away at periscope depth. The battleship saw the wake from my torps and manages to turn away by about 40* before my torpedos hit it and exploded. The first torp hit the very front of the bow and the last one hit the middle of the ship, with the other 2 evenly spaced between them. There were a few small explosions and the ship rolled over and sank quickly. The escorts started searching but I escaped without even a ping in my direction.
It wasn't as exciting and dramatic as I had hoped, but at least I finaly got a capital ship :D .

I came across a taskforce a couple of patrols back. 2 illustrious CV, a a fiji, followed by a pair of dido's, A nelson BB and 2 Revenge BB's with 2 tribal's as escort, with 3 Aux crusiers following behind! :o :o

Attack the CV's first. 1 torp into one CV and another into the fiji, two torps miss. Damaged them but still running at 16knt. Fire stern tube a injured CV, but undamged CV zigs infront of torp. KBOOM!!! Hit her ammo and she tear's herself apart!

Two Dido's approaching, shoot a single torp at each, first misses, but the second hits, breaking her back and sinking her.

The Nelson approaches, but turns so no torp can get her. Instead I shoot two off at the first renown BB. The first misses, but second strikes home. BOOM!! Her mag goes up like a roman candle! add one BB to my kill list.

Fire my final torp (one does remain in external stores, but now is not the time to fetch it!) at the secon renown but she spots the wake of the T1 and goes all astern causing the torp to miss.

I watched as the aux cruisers sailed past like target on a shooting range, but no rounds left to fire (I should have let that convoy go, but the T2's and T3's wanted to be hit)

Let the taskforce sail over the horizon before coming to the surface to get to my final torp. suddenly were under attack. Swordfish bombers were attacking. Main the flack guns!. Shot down ten while loading the final eel.

Submerged to shake the planes, and headed toward Ireland to take a crack at any target that may appear. My sonar operator picks up a fast moving merchat during a sound check. We surface to get to position in time. A passenger liner is spoted. Let her close and fire the final eel on a mag setting. It hits and brings her to a standstill. I order surface and man the deck gun. We start to pour shells into her waterline, when the watch officer screams Airplane sighted!

Man the flack is ordered, but before the crew can see off the intruder, a bomb explodes alongside the deck gun crew, killing one and injuring another. More crew race to take the fallen places. The bomber is shot down and the deck gun finnish off the liner.

We bury our dead friend at sea, while the injured one is improving under the care of our medic.

Make our way home to a warm welcome and plenty of medals and renown!

Life is Good!!

Never encoutered a BB in the open sea a few patrols ago did go to Loch ewe to do some carrier bashing and while gloating on my success in godsview I noticed large plumes of smoke near the entrance of the loch but dismissed them as dd's being nosey at what the explosions were in the harbor, took out the carrier, then the fiji, then the RAF came looking for me bombing the crap out the harbor so I decided to head out back to sea.
On the way out what I thought were DD's turned out to be a Nelson, and a revenge class BB's and 7 escorts the harbor entrance was littered with wrecks of partly sunk DDs,the nelson was the fist to be hit and she went down then the revenge took out 5 of the 7 escorts too would have sank them all but I was left with 1 fish and 2 very miffed escorts dropping dc every were had to hide in between the wrecks to shake them off they eventually got bored 1 beached itself so I was lucky to escape that time.
