View Full Version : Best torp settings for a stern shot

Hello,
I have a save where I am in a position where a destroyer is passing my stern on a 90 degrees course of about 159 degrees travelling at 14 Kts at 350M range. I am at a dead stop. The perfect position to kill it I think.
However I have tried to wack it with a two torp salvo many times but just keep missing, with the torps going of in totally the wrong direction or passing by the destroyers stern long after it has shot past.
I have tried the fast 90 method setting the AOB thing in the TDC to 90deg port and starboard and also setting the scope to 180 deg, and the AOB gauge in the TDC to 180. I put in the speed, 14 Kts. However I just can't set up the TDC properly to get this destroyer.
Can anybody suggest in a step by step kind of way how I should set up the TDC for a good shot?

Its a destroyer!
your not really ment to shoot them.
apart from that advice I cant really help, it looks like your doing everything right. How do you know the destroyer is going at 14knts?
What kind of torp are you useing?

It's going at 14Kts because I measured it by marking the map waiting 3 mins 15 secs and marking again. How would you set up your TDC and scope?
I am using electric torps with a magnetic pistol.
I would:
*enable manual input
*Set bearing (first dial) to 180*
*Set Angle on bow to 90* if the destroyer is going from right to left as you look at it or to 275* if is is going left to right
*Set the speed to 14knts
*Have a wild guess at the distance
*Open the tube (must be a torpedo type that does not leave a trail)
*Set the detonation as magnetic and run it 1.5m below the keel (more if its rough water
*Wait until the destroyer is at your 180*
*Fire
*Pray

Yep, that's pretty much what I did, but as the Destroyer was going so fast the angle of impact was pretty high, and I think the ship was too close to let the torp arm it's self. One did bounce of the ship however, but didn't go of, I think the running depth was too high as well.
After a try or two more, the destroyer seemed to detect me, once running over me, and again on each sucessive try it seemed to try to ram me.
So I gave up and ran away, saved two torps and lived to fight another day....
Thanks anyway. I think I get this manual targeting thing now....Sort of.....

Torpedo probably bounced because your too close (minimum arm distance is 250-300) or you hit the bottom curve of the hull (which is too much of an angle for the torp)
Also keep in mind destroyers will try to evade (and they do it very well as they are small, fairly agile and fast) any torpedoes they see.
As for the torpedo going behind you probably either forgot to switch the tdc back to tracking (switching it back so you cant alter speed etc) your aob is reversed (this will cause the tdc to think the ship is going the other way). Forgot to open the tube first before shooting (this realy throws off your accuracy as the torpedo uses the settings when you pressed fire, but is held back a few seconds while the tube opens)
Also torpedoes tend to hit in front or to the rear of a ship if you fire early when the torpedo bearing isnt 000 or 180 (for rear) due to the torpedo having to turn to get on course.
